Divine Mastery Over Nature
Exodus · Red Sea · Miracles · Divine Kingship
In the Midrash: the sea split into twelve passages corresponding to the twelve tribes.
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash that emphasizes the individualized redemption of each tribe.
The explanation: the sea is an independent creation, as the Sages said, “Everything that exists on land exists in the sea.”
He clarifies that the sea is not merely water but a full parallel realm of creation.
And so it is written in the Midrash on Parashat Zakhor, regarding the Sabbath, and likewise in Yalkut on Yitro.
He points to additional Midrashic sources linking the sea’s nature to deeper structures of creation.
The Holy One, blessed be He, desired to alter all of creation for the sake of His people Israel.
Creation itself is flexible when its purpose is the redemption and elevation of Israel.
He changed the natural order on land through the ten plagues.
The miracles in Egypt were disruptions of the earthly realm.
So too, ten miracles occurred at the sea.
The sea, as a parallel realm, experienced its own full set of miracles.
And afterwards He altered the heavens through His descent upon Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments.
The revelation at Sinai transformed the heavenly realm just as earlier miracles transformed earth and sea.
And all this was so that all of nature would be nullified before Israel, enabling them to repair everything through their good deeds.
The aim of miracles is empowerment: Israel’s actions can then realign creation to its intended purpose.
And in the Midrash on “Your throne is established”: although Your throne was never settled, it became settled from “Then Moses sang.” The king stands; the Augustus sits.
The Midrash contrasts standing—active vigilance—with sitting—secure rule established beyond challenge.
The explanation: a king stands to watch over his people and servants so they do not rebel, as is the way of other kings.
Standing symbolizes a monarchy not yet firmly established.
But when he wins wars and his name becomes known, and all nations and nobles fear him—for the kingship is his and he prevails wherever he turns—
Once authority is fully recognized, vigilance is no longer required.
Then he no longer needs to guard the kingship, and he sits.
Sitting represents settled, uncontested kingship.
So too, through Israel’s redemption from Egypt, God’s royal glory was clarified to Israel, and they clarified that the kingship is His; therefore, so to speak, He sits.
The redemption allowed Israel to perceive and affirm God’s sovereignty, establishing His throne below.
“Then he sang” is a term of leadership, as in “And Abimelech led,” meaning that Israel became princes and leaders, as explained above.
Their song reflects their rise to spiritual leadership.
His royal glory became settled below, for Israel clarified the truth and eradicated all foreign worship, as explained above.
The establishment of divine kingship in the world is accomplished through Israel’s discernment and purification of devotion.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the miracles of Egypt, the sea, and Sinai restructured earth, sea, and heaven so Israel could reveal God’s kingship through their deeds. This revelation culminated at the Song at the Sea, when divine sovereignty became settled in the world.
