עומדות היו רגלינו בשעריך ירושלים כו'.
“Our feet were standing within your gates, Jerusalem.”
The verse is interpreted as referring to the pilgrimage festivals, when Israel would ascend to Jerusalem.
קאי על המועדות כדכ' שלש פעמים בשנה יראה כל זכורך כו'.
It refers to the festivals, as it is written: “Three times a year all your males shall appear…”
The Sefat Emet links the verse directly to the commandment of festival pilgrimage.
והוא מתנה מהשי"ת אשר כל איש ישראל הי' בכחו לראות פני ה' בעזרה.
And it is a gift from God that every Jew had the ability to behold the Divine Presence in the Temple courtyard.
This ability is described as a spiritual empowerment granted specifically on the festivals.
ואמת דכתיב כל זכורך כי המועדות הם מאספין ומאחדין את בנ"י להיות כאיש אחד.
Indeed it says “all your males,” for the festivals gather and unite Israel to be like one person.
The unity of Israel is presented as the inner reason all are commanded to appear.
ועי"ז יכולין להראות לפניו ית'.
And through this unity they are able to appear before God.
The capacity to enter the Divine Presence depends on collective oneness.
כי מועד לשון התאספות.
For the word “moed” means gathering.
This offers a linguistic support for the theme of communal unification.
וכתיב מה יפו פעמיך בנעלים דרשו חז"ל על הרגלים נעילת החג ונעילת הפסח כו'.
And it is written: “How beautiful are your footsteps in sandals”; the Sages interpreted this regarding the festivals, the close of the Festival and the close of Passover.
The Sefat Emet uses the midrash to connect physical steps with festival observance.
כי נעל הוא שמירת הרגל.
For a shoe protects the foot.
The metaphor positions the festival as a spiritual protection.
כמו כן הקב"ה פורס סוכת שלום ברגלים הללו על בנ"י להצילם מהתערובות שנמצא בעולם השפל הזה.
So too God spreads a shelter of peace over Israel on these festivals, protecting them from the impurities found in this lowly world.
The holidays are portrayed as divine shielding from worldly corruption.
כמו ששומרין הרגל מטיט ושאר דברים ע"י שהוא תחתון שבאדם.
Just as one protects the foot from mud and other things because it is the lowest part of a person.
The analogy reinforces the idea that protection is needed especially in the realms closest to impurity.
[ואיתא ברמב"ם (פי"ג מה' אישות) שצריך כל איש ישראל לעשות לב"ב מנעלים חדשים בכל רגל והיא רמז לסוד הזה].
[And it is taught in Rambam that every Jew must provide his household with new shoes on each festival, and this alludes to this secret.]
The halachic requirement is presented as a symbolic act mirroring the spiritual protection of the festivals.
