The Eternal unfolding of Song

אז ישיר פרש"י עלה בלבו שישיר וכן עשה וקשה א"כ מה לי שעלה בלבו.

“Then he shall sing”: Rashi explains that it arose in his heart to sing, and so he did; and it is difficult—if so, what does it matter that it ‘arose in his heart’?

The Sefat Emet asks why the Torah emphasizes the inner thought of singing, if the singing ultimately occurred in action.

והענין הוא ששירה זו כוללת כל בנ"י.

The matter is that this song includes all the Children of Israel.

The Song at the Sea expresses a collective spiritual voice belonging to all Israel.

ויש לכל נפש ישראל אחיזה בזאת השירה.

Every Jewish soul has a grasp within this song.

Each person connects to the song, even across generations.

ויש מי שמוכן לשירה ואינו יכול להוציא מכח אל הפועל.

There are those who are prepared for song but cannot bring it from potential to actuality.

Some have the inner readiness for spiritual expression but lack the ability to express it outwardly.

ויש לו חלק בהכנה זו שנחשב המחשבה והמעשה לב' בחי' ליתן שכר לרצון ושכר למעשה.

And such a person nonetheless has a portion in this preparation, for thought and action are considered two aspects, granting reward for the desire and reward for the deed.

Even unexpressed spiritual intention is counted and rewarded.

וגם בלי ספק גדלה ענין ההכנה והמחשבה לגוף השירה כי בוודאי הרצון הי' יותר מכפי מה שנגמר במעשה.

And without doubt, the preparation and thought magnify the very essence of the song, for certainly the desire was greater than what was completed in action.

The inner yearning surpasses the actual verbalized song and deepens its spiritual power.

וע"ז רמזו ישיר לתחיית המתים.

And to this they hinted by “he shall sing”—a reference to the resurrection of the dead.

The future tense points to a future completion of the song.

כי לא נגמר עדיין השירה כפי אשר עלה בלבם והגמר יהי' לעתיד.

For the song has not yet been completed as it arose in their hearts, and its completion will be in the future.

The full inner intention of Israel’s spiritual song will be realized only in the ultimate future.

וז"ש ישיר כו' לאמר.

And this is the meaning of “he shall sing … saying.”

The expression signals an ongoing, unfolding process.

כי שירה הוא דביקות והשתלשלות מדריגה אחר מדריגה והתחיל השירה והשתלשלות זה בקי"ס.

For song is attachment and a chain of descent from level to level, and this song and chain began at the splitting of the sea.

Song expresses a progressive spiritual ascent that began with the miracle of the Sea.

וכך היא עומדת ונגמרת מדור לדור עד לעתיד שיהי' שירה שלימה.

And so it stands and is completed from generation to generation until the future, when there will be a complete song.

The song continues through history and will reach perfection only at the end of days.

לכן אומרים השירה בכל יום.

Therefore we recite the Song every day.

Daily recitation participates in the ongoing process of completing the song.

ולא הארת שירת יום זה כיום השני וכך הולכת ונגמרת מיום ליום כנ"ל.

And the radiance of the song of one day is not like that of the next, and thus it proceeds and is completed day by day, as said above.

Each day adds a unique spiritual illumination to the evolving, multi-generational song.
