Spiritual Ascent of the Omer
Omer · Kabbalat HaTorah · Jewish Unity · Spiritual Elevation
In the verse “and he shall wave… for your favor; on the morrow of the Sabbath he shall wave it.”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting the wording of the verse regarding the waving of the omer.
It means: according to the desire of the Children of Israel, so the omer is elevated — which is the elevation of the community of Israel toward the Holy One.
The omer represents Israel’s own spiritual ascent; their inner will directly raises the offering above.
And in accordance with how the will of Israel expands below, so they are elevated in their root above.
The Sefat Emet teaches the principle of correspondence: human spiritual expansion creates a parallel elevation in the divine realms.
Therefore there are fifty days of counting the omer, like the period from the Exodus until the giving of the Torah, during which they elevated themselves each day until reaching the level necessary for receiving the Torah.
Each day of the count corresponds to an incremental rise, just as Israel grew spiritually in the journey from Egypt to Sinai.
And this is the meaning of “on the morrow of the Sabbath he shall wave it.”
The unusual phrase hints to the beginning point of this upward movement.
It should have said “the day after the Sabbath” or “on the next day”; what is meant by “from the morrow.”
The Sefat Emet questions the precise wording, which appears to indicate a process rather than a moment.
Rather, from the morrow of the Sabbath this elevation begins and continues until Shavuot, when the two loaves are offered, which possess a unified oneness, and this is enough said.
The “morrow” marks the inception of a continuous elevation, culminating at Shavuot with the offering that symbolizes complete unity.
This is the meaning of “when Moses raised his hand.”
The raising of hands similarly represents spiritual elevation initiated from below.
Therefore, by the power of the commandment of the omer, they defeated Haman in the days of Ahasuerus, for he embodies elevation up to the fiftieth gate.
The omer provides access to transcendent spiritual levels, enabling Israel to overcome forces symbolized by Haman.
Thus the Sages wrote that the Torah was truly accepted in the days of Mordechai and Esther, as explained regarding Purim — understand this well.
Purim represents a renewed acceptance of Torah, linked to the same spiritual elevation embodied in the omer.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the omer reflects Israel’s inner will and spiritual ascent, beginning “from the morrow” and rising continuously until full unity at Shavuot. This dynamic of elevation also explains victories in later generations, such as in the Purim story.
