Fifty Levels of Redemption

Pesach · תר"מ (1879) · Essay 9

Exodus · Zohar · Fifty Gates · Spiritual Ascent

“In the verse: ‘And the children of Israel went up from the land of Egypt in fifty.’”

The Sefat Emet opens by noting that the Torah describes the Exodus as involving fifty ascents.

“According to the words of the Zohar, the Exodus from Egypt is mentioned fifty times in the Torah.”

This ties the numerical detail in the verse to a deeper pattern identified by the Zohar.

“And presumably these are fifty actual redemptions, like what is written in the books: that the forty-nine gates of impurity correspond to the fifty gates of understanding.”

The fifty mentions are interpreted as fifty spiritual steps of redemption, aligned with the mystical structure of impurity and understanding.

“Therefore the verse is correct in its plain meaning: there were fifty ascents for the children of Israel from Egypt.”

Thus the Sefat Emet affirms that the number fifty is literal as well as symbolic.

“Fifty times they ascended from the land of Egypt.”

Each ascent represents another stage of release and inner elevation.

“And even after the Exodus they ascended fifty elevations, as explained above regarding the waving of the omer.”

The spiritual journey continued beyond leaving Egypt, culminating in fifty further levels of elevation connected to the omer-counting process.

Summary: The Sefat Emet interprets the number fifty in the Exodus narrative as literal stages of ascent, corresponding to mystical structures of redemption and continued elevation through the omer.
