Hidden Defeat of Baal Tzafon
Baal Tzafon · Future Redemption · Egypt Plagues · Divine Justice
The downfall of Baal Tzafon is not explicitly stated in the Torah.
The Sefat Emet notes that the Torah never directly records the defeat of the Egyptian deity Baal Tzafon.
For certainly it had a downfall afterward, as it is written: “And upon all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments.”
Even if not mentioned by name, Baal Tzafon must have been judged along with all the Egyptian gods.
But it is hidden, just as its name is “Baal Tzafon” (the Hidden One).
The nature of this deity was concealment, and thus its downfall was likewise concealed.
And it is possible that its downfall remains for the future, for the future redemption will be like the days of the Exodus from Egypt.
The Sefat Emet suggests that a final destruction of this force is reserved for the ultimate redemption.
And one may say the hint is like the hidden afikoman that remains from the redemption of Egypt each year for the future.
The afikoman, symbolically hidden, represents the unfinished elements of redemption awaiting completion.
So too, then will be its downfall.
The final redemption will bring the ultimate defeat of this concealed force.
For it is written “I will execute,” implying that it will yet be fulfilled.
The verse hints that some aspect of judgment remains to be realized in the future.
Nevertheless, it appears that certainly judgments were already executed upon it.
Part of Baal Tzafon’s downfall did occur during the Exodus.
Only perhaps a small remnant of it was left for the future.
A trace of this force persists until the final redemption.
May the Blessed Hashem merit us to witness His vengeance upon all other gods, speedily in our days.
The Sefat Emet concludes with a prayer for the complete eradication of idolatry.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Baal Tzafon’s downfall was partially hidden during the Exodus, with its final defeat reserved for the ultimate redemption, symbolized by the hidden afikoman. The future redemption will complete what began in Egypt.
