Passover Night of Protection
Pesach · Divine Protection · Afikoman · Memory · Matzah
“A night of watchfulness… for their generations.”
The Sefat Emet begins by emphasizing that the protective quality of the original Passover night extends across all generations.
From the night of Passover, a protection remains for all the days of the year.
The holiness and safeguarding of the festival night overflow, providing spiritual protection throughout the entire year.
Just as it was then a night of watchfulness for generations.
The original redemption established an eternal pattern: that night is inherently guarded for all time.
So too, every year, protection remains from this night for all the days of the year.
Each year’s Passover reenacts the primal redemption, renewing its protective energy for the coming year.
And this is the hint in the afikoman: to leave a portion of the matzah for the entire year.
The custom of setting aside the afikoman symbolizes carrying the Passover night’s safeguarding power forward into daily life.
And so it is written: “So that you may remember, through this bread of affliction, all the days of your life.”
Matzah becomes the vehicle through which the memory and spiritual influence of the Exodus remain present always.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the sanctity and protection of the Passover night endure throughout the year. The afikoman and the command to remember through matzah embody this ongoing spiritual safeguarding.
