The Omer and Clarifying Firstness

“In the commandment of the Omer.”
The Sefat Emet begins by anchoring the teaching in the mitzvah of bringing the Omer offering.
“The beginning of your harvest.”
The Omer represents the first portion of Israel’s produce, the ‘beginning’ that frames all spiritual processes.
“And bread and parched grain etc. you shall not eat until this very day.”
Before the Omer is offered, one may not eat from the new grain, indicating that the ‘beginning’ must first be elevated.
For it is written: “In the beginning God created,” meaning for the sake of Israel, who are called ‘beginning,’ as it is said: “Israel is holy to the Lord, the beginning of His harvest.”
Creation’s purpose is linked to Israel, who embody the primordial ‘beginning’ that animates the world.
“For everything depends on the beginning.”
The first point—the root intention—determines the quality of all that follows.
“And the beginning in the heavens is the Torah, which is called ‘the beginning of His way.’”
In the higher realms, the primordial beginning manifests as Torah.
“But on earth it is written: ‘And the earth was chaos…,’ and waste was mixed into it.”
The earthly world begins in mixture and confusion, lacking clarity and refinement.
“However, through the children of Israel, the beginning on earth is clarified.”
Israel’s service refines the primordial point within the physical world.
“And through separating the beginning, the remainder is clarified from waste.”
When the first portion is elevated, the rest of reality becomes purified.
“As stated elsewhere in the name of the Zohar: ‘The first of the fruits of your land you shall bring; through this, you shall not cook a kid in its mother’s milk.’”
The Zohar connects offering the first fruits with preventing improper mixtures; proper elevation resolves damaging intermingling.
“And it is written: ‘On the morrow of the Sabbath he shall wave it.’”
The waving of the Omer takes place only after a specific redemptive moment.
“For not at all times can the beginning be elevated to oneness—only after the Exodus.”
Freedom enables the spiritual capacity to raise the primordial point into divine unity.
“For this itself is the essence of freedom: the ability to clarify and elevate the beginning point.”
Redemption grants the power to refine and uplift the root of holiness within the world.
“Therefore raising and lowering, moving it to and fro to halt harmful dews and winds—this is the clarification of good from evil, as taught.”
The waving motion of the Omer embodies the separation of good from harmful forces.
“Therefore the downfall of Haman was through the power of the waving of the Omer, for it is the rectification of the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil.”
The Omer corrects primordial mixture; Haman, born of mixture, is undone by it.
“And all of Haman’s power derives from mixture, as the sages said: ‘From where is Haman in the Torah? From ‘the tree.’”
Haman’s root is in the original confusion introduced by the Tree of Knowledge.
“Therefore it is forbidden each year to eat the produce of the land because of the waste in it until this very day, when the clarification is completed.”
The prohibition on new grain reflects the annual need for spiritual refinement before the harvest becomes permissible.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the Omer offering embodies the refinement of the primordial ‘beginning,’ elevating Israel, the world, and creation itself from mixture to clarity.
