Shabbat as Testimony
Shabbat · Passover · Exodus · Divine Witness · Holiness
“Passover is also called ‘Shabbat,’ for Shabbat is called ‘testimony,’ in which we bear witness to the Holy One.”
The Sefat Emet explains that both Shabbat and Passover share the quality of being forms of testimony, moments in which Israel affirms the presence and sovereignty of God.
“And Pesach, ‘peh saḥ’—a speaking mouth—means that through the Exodus the Children of Israel became witnesses, as it is written: ‘You are My witnesses.’”
The Exodus empowered Israel to become active proclaimers of God’s truth, giving them the voice and status of witnesses before the world.
“Therefore, although Shabbat is the first of the sacred convocations and above them all…”
Even with its superior sanctity, Shabbat alone was not yet accessible in its fullness to Israel before they had undergone the Exodus.
“Nevertheless, the Children of Israel were not prepared for Shabbat until after the Exodus, as it is written: ‘And you shall remember that you were a slave… therefore the Lord commanded you… to make the Shabbat.’”
The experience of liberation made Israel capable of truly receiving Shabbat, for only free people can fully embrace the rest and divine testimony that Shabbat embodies.
“Thus, the ultimate purpose of the Exodus is Shabbat.”
The Sefat Emet concludes that liberation reaches its completion in the spiritual rest and divine connection of Shabbat.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that both Pesach and Shabbat are forms of testimony. Through the Exodus, Israel gained the capacity to act as witnesses to God, and only afterward could they fully receive Shabbat. Therefore, the goal of the Exodus is realized in the sanctity and rest of Shabbat.
