כתבו חז"ל בפסוק והנה מצרים נוסע אחריהם ראו שרן של מצרים.
The Sages wrote regarding the verse “And behold, Egypt was traveling after them” that the Israelites saw the ministering angel of Egypt.
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that what the Israelites perceived was not merely the Egyptian army, but the spiritual force—the “sar” (ministering angel)—that governed Egypt.
ובזוה"ק כ' וירא ישראל כו' מצרים מת היינו השר של מצרים ע"ש.
And the Zohar states that “Israel saw … Egypt dead,” meaning the ministering angel of Egypt was destroyed.
The true downfall of Egypt occurred when its spiritual root was nullified, not just its physical army.
וזה הי' גמר הישועה מיד מצרים.
And this was the completion of the salvation from Egypt.
The redemption reached fullness only when the spiritual power behind Egypt was defeated.
וכ' ה' ילחם לכם בשבילכם משמע שהי' מוטל מלחמה זו על בנ"י.
And it is written, “God will fight for you,” which implies that this battle had been placed upon Israel.
Israel assumed that they were responsible for confronting the spiritual enemy themselves.
וכמו שנתאבק יעקב אע"ה עם שרו של עשו שבזה נצח את עשו.
Just as Jacob wrestled with Esau’s ministering angel, and through this he defeated Esau.
The pattern parallels Jacob’s victory, which occurred by overcoming the spiritual root rather than the physical adversary.
ובנ"י ראו שר נוסע וייראו שהיו סבורים ג"כ שעליהם להלחם עמו ואין זה כח אנושי.
And Israel saw the ministering angel advancing and were afraid, for they thought they too had to fight it, though this is beyond human capacity.
Their fear stemmed from imagining that the spiritual confrontation required their own strength.
ולכן אמר להם מרע"ה אל תיראו כו' ה' ילחם לכם.
Therefore Moses said to them: “Do not fear… God will fight for you.”
Moses reassured them that this upper‑world battle belonged to God alone.
וב' מלחמות אלו צריכין להיות באומה שלמטה ובשר שלמעלה.
And these two battles must occur: one with the nation below and one with the minister above.
Redemption requires victory on both planes—the earthly and the spiritual.
והם ב' בחי' יעקב וישראל.
And these correspond to the two aspects, Jacob and Israel.
Jacob symbolizes struggle in the lower world; Israel symbolizes triumph in the upper realm.
והוא יצ"מ וקי"ס.
And these are the Exodus from Egypt and the splitting of the Sea.
The Exodus addressed the earthly liberation; the Sea reflected the spiritual liberation.
ואחז"ל גדולה ביזת הים מביזת מצרים.
And the Sages said that the spoils of the Sea were greater than the spoils of Egypt.
The greatness of the spoils corresponds to the depth of the spiritual rectification achieved.
דכל הרכוש גדול היה להוציא נצוצי קדושה שנתערב במצרים.
For all the great wealth was for extracting sparks of holiness that had become mixed into Egypt.
The physical wealth symbolized the recovery of spiritual energy trapped in Egyptian impurity.
ומכש"כ השר שלמעלה הנצוצות שנטבעו בו הם רבים וגבוהים ביותר.
And all the more so with the minister above—its embedded sparks were far more numerous and exalted.
Because the spiritual root held loftier sparks, its defeat yielded greater spiritual gain.
ולכן גדולה ביזת הים.
Therefore, the spoils of the Sea were greater.
The Sea’s victory symbolized a far more profound spiritual retrieval than that of Egypt itself.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel’s redemption required two levels of battle—earthly and spiritual. The downfall of Egypt’s ministering angel at the Sea completed the salvation and released higher sparks of holiness, which is why the spoils of the Sea surpassed those of Egypt.
