Chanukah תרל”ד 10

מצות חנוכה נר איש וביתו. וקשה מה נשתנה מכל המצות ומה ענין המצוה להבית. ונר שבת שאני משום שלום בית. וגם שם המצוה רק להיות נר דולק אבל בכאן הדלקה עושה מצוה ואם הדליקה חש”ו פסול א”כ למה לא ידלק כל בר חיובא בפ”ע. וי”ל כי בהתאסף כל כחות האדם וב”ב השייכין אליו יוכל לקיים המצות בשלימות יותר. ומצות נר חנוכה מבחוץ והוא שיוכל האדם להביא במעשיו הארה במקום החושך ולזאת צריך האדם ליקח עמו כל התלוי בו. והשי”ת ברא האדם בעוה”ז כדי שיוכל להביא הארת התורה בכל מעשה גשמיי כשעושהו עפ”י התורה כראוי. ולזאת אין נכון לפרוש עצמו רק להיות הרצון לקרב הכל להשי”ת ומשבחין בני ישראל על זה שמקבלין הגלות ברצון כדי להמשיך הארה גם בחושך לקיים רצון השי”ת וכן בגלות מצרים שירדו יעקב ובניו כתיב איש וביתו באו שהכינו עצמם בקבלת מסירת נפש וכל אשר להם לרצונו ית’ וכן נ”ח מבחוץ כנ”ל איש וביתו [ומהדרין נר לכל אחד הוא מדריגה גבוהה לתקן כל פרט ופרט מהתלוים בו. ואנחנו הלואי שנזכה לתקן בכלל] כנ”ל:

The Mitzvah of lighting the Chanukah candles is called נר איש וביתו, a mitzvah done by the master of the house with his family (Shabbos 21b).
Now the question arises, why is this mitzvah different to all other mitzvot, and what is the significance of the home?
Now it is not the same as the Shabbos candles (which are also done at home), because they are different being as the reason for Shabbos candles is to generate peace in the home. Furthermore the mitzvah of Shabbos candles is so that there will be light, whereas by Chanukah it is the actual moment of lighting the candles that is the mitzvah, and if for example a deaf, senile or a child lit them, it does not fulfill the obligation.
If so why should we not just light the candles on our own (what is the significance of the home and family)?
We can answer that it is really through gathering all of one’s energy, and his household who are connected to him, that one is able to perform the mitzvah with greater perfection.
The mitzvah of Chanukah candles takes place outside, this symbolizes the idea that a person needs to illuminate the darkest palces with his actions. Tho do this one needs to use everything that is connected to him.
Furthermore HaShem created man in this world for the purpose of bringing the light of the Torah into physical actions. This occurs when one does physical actions according to the Torah (through the mitzvot which are called candles). Therefore it is not right for a person to separate himself (from all physicality), rather a person’s desire should be to elevate everything to HaShem.
Therefore Bnei Yisrael are praised for accepting the exile willfully, for they are able to brign the light even into the darkness and fulfill the will of HaShem. So too in the exile to Mitzrayim, it staes that Yaakov and his children איש וביתו each man and his household came. This means that they prepared themeselves with absolute self sacrifice with everything that they had, to fulfill the will of HaShem.
So too with the light of Chanukah it is done outside, with a mn and his househould, as explained.
[The idea of the Mehadrin (Shabbos 21a), where one lights a candle for each one of his family members, is an even greater level, where one is able to correctly repair each and every detail that is connected to him. If only we will merit to repair in general] as above.
