Vayishlach
‘And Yaakov sent angels to Eisav’ TheZohar explains the pasuk ‘And He will send His angels to protect you, these angels that protect us are the good and evil inclinations!
The explanation is that the evil inclination is also there for our benefit and protection. Because a person is extra careful to beat the evil inclination, and once he beats it then that energy that was pulling him negatively, is converted to a holiness and works in the opposite direction.
And with this explanation we can understand how Eisav was able to receive such holy beings as angels.
For just as when a person does a mitzvah this creates an angel, so too when a person prevents himself from transgressing a negative commandment he also creates an angel. This angel is there to help him repair the world even in distant places.
And perhaps that is why Yaakov had to go to Lavan, to find and extract all of those angels that were trapped in the negative forces
and now that these angels were ‘working’ for Yaakov they could now go and communicate all the things that Yaakov needed to communicate to Eisav. Yaakov needed messengers for this because he didn’t want to get close to Eisav.
And this is what is meant that ‘He will send His angels to protect on all of your travels’, because they offer protection in everything, even the most distant things that need protection.
Regarding Yaakov, it says that on his way to Lavan, the sun set early to cause him to sleep in Bet El, and after he fought the angel, the sun shone ‘made up’ the hours that it had set early and rose early in order to heal Yaakov from his limp.
This means that on the way to Charan, day became night, and on the way back, night became day.
For when Yaakov was on his mission to Charan, the idea was to convert darkness into light, for he went into the darkest of places in order to extract the hidden light from there. Which is the idea of converting darkness into light. We see that he completed this mission successfully by the end result when the night became day.
And this is what is meant that “Yaakov came to Shalem”, that he completed the world all for HaShem. (By converting the dark into light).
The word Shechem stands for ‘the glorious name of HaShem’. Because Yaakov purified the glory of HaShem even in this world, in the darkest of places
And his travelling to Charan, is similar to the idea of working six days and his coming to Shechem was the idea of Shabbos. As it says ‘He camped by the city’ which our sages teach us that yaakov made techum shabbos, the measurements of where one can go on Shabbos.
