ויירא ויצר במדרש הבחור שבאבות ושבנביאים אע”פ שהבטיחן הקב”ה נתייראו.
“He was afraid and distressed — in the Midrash: the choicest among the Patriarchs and among the Prophets, even though the Holy One blessed be He promised them, were afraid.”
The Sefat Emet explains that even the greatest figures experience fear despite divine promises, teaching that spiritual greatness does not remove human vulnerability.
פי’ שהקב”ה אמר לו והנה אנכי עמך וכן למרע”ה אהי’ עמך.
“Meaning: the Holy One said to him, ‘Behold, I am with you,’ and likewise to Moses, ‘I will be with you.’”
The divine assurance itself highlights that God accompanies the righteous in their missions.
ומזה עצמו ידעו כי היו צריכין לסייעתא דשמיא טובא כמ”ש עמו אנכי בצרה.
“And from this itself they understood that they required great heavenly assistance, as it is said, ‘I am with him in distress.’”
The promises reveal dependence on divine support; God’s presence signals the need for assistance rather than its absence.
וכעין שכ’ עזוב תעזוב עמו דרשו חז”ל אם אמר עליך המצוה פרוק אין נזקק לו.
“And similar to what is written ‘You shall surely help him’ — the Sages taught: if the obligated person says, ‘Unload it for me,’ one need not assist him.”
The obligation to help applies only when the other makes an effort; help is cooperative, not unilateral.
דהמצוה לעזור לו.
“For the commandment is to help him.”
Help is granted when a person participates in his own redemption.
וכן המדה למעלה.
“And so is the measure Above.”
Divine assistance follows the same pattern — human effort invites heavenly aid.
וכן אמר יעקב אבינו ע”ה ואתה אמרת היטב איטיב עמך וידע שצריך הכנה שלו עד מקום שידו מגעת.
“Thus Jacob our father said: ‘And You said, I will surely do good with you,’ and he knew he must prepare himself as far as his ability reached.”
Jacob understood that divine blessing requires personal preparation.
ויעקב אבינו שכתוב בו ופרצת ימה וקדמה נחלה בלי מצרים.
“And regarding Jacob it is written, ‘You shall burst forth westward and eastward’ — an inheritance without boundaries.”
Jacob embodies boundlessness, spiritual expansion beyond limitations.
היינו שהוא הכין לכל הדורות ועבר כל המצרים.
“Meaning: he prepared for all generations and crossed all boundaries.”
Jacob established the spiritual pathways allowing Israel to overcome future constraints.
ולכן כתיב ויצר לו.
“Therefore it is written, ‘and he was distressed.’”
His distress was part of his task of breaking limitations for all his descendants.
ואז עמו אנכי בצרה ובקע ועבר כל המצרים.
“And then: ‘I am with him in distress,’ and he split through and passed all boundaries.”
With divine presence, Jacob shattered every spiritual and natural barrier.
וע”ש זה נקרא יעקב היטב איטיב הוא התורה שנקראת טוב.
“And because of this Jacob is called ‘I will surely do good,’ which is the Torah that is called ‘good.’”
The goodness associated with Jacob refers to Torah, the ultimate source of spiritual expansion.
וכמ”ש פי’ רש”י ז”ל אור שברא במעשה בראשית מאיר מסוף העולם ועד סופו.
“As Rashi explains: the light created in Creation shines from one end of the world to the other.”
The primordial light symbolizes unlimited spiritual illumination.
היינו שעובר כל חשכת הטבע כמ”ש ידע מה בחשוכא ועמי’ שריא נהורא.
“Meaning: it passes through all the darkness of nature, as it says: ‘He knows what is in the darkness, and with Him dwells light.’”
The divine light penetrates and transcends natural obscurity.
ולכן יעקב שהוא התורה עבר ופרץ כל החומות והגבילים ומחיצות המפסיקות בין ישראל לאביהן שבשמים.
“Therefore Jacob, who is Torah, passed through and broke all walls, limits, and partitions separating Israel from their Father in Heaven.”
Jacob’s spiritual breakthrough dismantles barriers and creates enduring connection between Israel and God.
