Receiving the Gift of Shabbat Vayishlach

Sefat Emet, Genesis, Vayishlach 18:5

In the Midrash: “And he encamped before the city” — he arrived on Friday near nightfall and established the Shabbat boundaries, etc. “And he encamped” implies that he brought rest, for the radiance of Shabbat depends on those who guard Shabbat. And I heard from my grandfather, of blessed memory, that the sages taught that one acquires the state of Shabbat rest on Friday at twilight. Thus, Shabbat is acquired through receiving Shabbat at its entrance. And it seems possible to explain this matter according to their saying: The Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moses, “I have a precious gift in My treasury, and I seek to give it to Israel; go and inform them.” The wording “I seek to give it” is unclear, for He has already given us Shabbat. Rather, the meaning is that this is precisely the power of Shabbat — that the Children of Israel are vessels able to receive this precious gift, which cannot be revealed except on the holy Shabbat. And every Shabbat is a new gift. A person must therefore prepare himself and know how to be ready to receive this gift from the hidden light. Therefore, we request every Shabbat: “And grant us as an inheritance… Your holy Shabbat.” For although Shabbat has been given to us in general, there is a particular Shabbat in each and every Shabbat, and we must acquire this resting-state at the entrance of the day — this is the act of receiving Shabbat.

The Sefat Emet explains that Jacob’s “encamping” teaches that Shabbat’s rest is brought into the world through those who welcome it. Shabbat is not merely a fixed divine gift but a recurring offering of hidden light that Israel must actively receive each week through preparation and conscious acceptance at its onset.

Summary: Shabbat is a divine gift renewed each week, revealed only when Israel prepares itself to receive it through the act of welcoming Shabbat as it enters.
