Sanctity of Shabbat Space Vayishlach
It is stated in the Midrash that Jacob, about whom it is written that he kept Shabbat, “and he encamped before the city”—meaning he established Shabbat boundaries—thereby merited to inherit the land without measure.
The Sefat Emet opens by citing a Midrash that connects Jacob’s observance of Shabbat, expressed through setting Shabbat boundaries, with his receiving the land beyond measure. This establishes the theme: Shabbat creates a sanctified space that leads to unbounded blessing.
The idea is that on Shabbat one must establish a fixed place of dwelling, as it is written, “Between Me and the children of Israel it is a sign.”
He explains that Shabbat requires a clearly defined place, because Shabbat is a sign binding God and Israel, and that sign appears in the lived space of the Jew.
And it is written, “A Shabbat to God in all your dwellings.”
This verse reinforces that Shabbat sanctifies the physical dwelling of each Jew.
And so it is written “for their generations.”
He emphasizes that this sanctification of place extends through all generations of Israel.
For the place and dwelling of a Jew shines with the light of holiness on Shabbat; therefore, by setting Shabbat boundaries, the charm and radiance of Shabbat rests upon the city.
The sanctity of Shabbat emanates outward from the Jew’s dwelling; boundaries focus that holiness so it spreads properly within the city.
Our sages said: Blessing does not rest upon something measured or counted.
Blessing comes from what is unlimited; once something is quantified, it becomes tied to natural limitation.
For all measure and quantity stem from the realm of nature.
Measurement belongs to the finite, natural world.
And blessing comes from the root that has no limit or measure.
Blessing derives from a divine source beyond all boundaries.
Therefore Shabbat, in which blessing rests, was given only to the children of Israel.
Shabbat is the channel of boundless divine blessing and thus belongs uniquely to Israel.
And Shabbat requires guarding, as it is written, “And you shall guard the Shabbat.”
Because Shabbat channels unbounded blessing, it must be protected.
And the Shabbat boundaries serve to ensure that the light of Shabbat does not extend outward beyond the place designated for a Jew.
The boundaries prevent holy radiance from dispersing improperly.
For it is there that the blessing dwells.
Blessing must remain within its proper vessel.
For this reason, afterward the blessing spreads in measured and limited form.
Although its source is infinite, blessing ultimately manifests through natural measures.
So that it does not spread outward improperly.
The limits ensure that holiness remains contained within appropriate boundaries.
As it is said: God saw that the wicked were not worthy to use the light, and therefore stored it away within nature.
The primordial light was concealed so that it would not be misused; similarly, Shabbat-light is bounded.
Therefore Jacob, about whom Shabbat-guarding is written, was given the land beyond measure.
Jacob accessed the unbounded level of blessing through Shabbat observance.
And similarly it is stated regarding Isaac, that this estimation was for his tithes.
Isaac’s measuring was for the sake of a mitzvah, preparing a vessel for blessing.
For measurement done for the sake of a mitzvah is, on the contrary, a preparation for the blessing to rest upon it.
When measurement serves holiness, it becomes the vessel enabling infinite blessing to enter the finite world.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Shabbat creates a sanctified dwelling space whose boundaries allow divine blessing—originating from the limitless—to enter the world in proper, measured form. Jacob and Isaac exemplify how guarding Shabbat and using measure for mitzvah purposes opens the way for boundless blessing.
