Truth Rooted in Life Vayishlach
“And he was afraid and distressed, lest he kill others.”
The Sefat Emet explains Jacob’s distress as fear not only of being harmed but of harming others, revealing his deep attachment to the attribute of truth and life.
As it is written: “Grant truth to Jacob,” and Jacob is the aspect of the Tree of Life, the Torah of truth, and everything depends upon him—he is the tree of life, and sustenance for all is within him.
Jacob embodies the living flow of divine truth, the source from which all spiritual vitality is sustained.
And it is stated in the Zohar on “The enemy said,” that when Israel rules by grasping the body of the Tree, they must guard it and bring peace to all.
The Zohar teaches that when Israel is attached to the Tree of Life, they carry responsibility for maintaining cosmic harmony.
Therefore Jacob wished to give Esau his portion as well.
Jacob sought to extend truth and life even to Esau, aiming to restore balance and peace.
And even falsehood, our sages said, begins with truth.
Every distortion originates from a spark of truth, without which it cannot exist.
The hint is: “The living know they will die; the dead—the wicked—know nothing at all.”
The living, attached to truth, recognize boundaries; the wicked, detached from truth, lose all awareness.
Truth encompasses everything.
Since truth is rooted in the divine source of life, it holds all realities within it.
And they said: Falsehood has no legs, for it cannot endure.
Devoid of true foundation, falsehood collapses over time.
But at its beginning it must contain some attachment to the root of life.
Even falsehood depends on a minimal connection to truth for its temporary existence.
Summary: Jacob’s fear reflects his position as the embodiment of the Tree of Life and truth, upon whom cosmic balance depends. Even falsehood survives only by borrowing a spark of truth, and Jacob seeks to extend peace, even to Esau, to preserve universal harmony.
