Truth in Fulfilling Mitzvot For תרל”ג 3
עשוים באמת וישר.
“They are made in truth and uprightness.”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting that the deeds or commandments must be formed through genuine truth and integrity.
נראה לפרש שקאי על האדם העושה המצוה שא”א לעשותם רק באמת.
“It seems one may explain that this refers to the person performing the commandment, for it is impossible to perform them except in truth.”
He explains that the verse is not about the mitzvot abstractly, but about the inner state of the person doing them: they require authenticity.
ר”ל מי שהוא אמת וישר באמצעות מדות אלו נעשים.
“That is, one who is truthful and upright—through these qualities the deeds are accomplished.”
The fulfillment of the mitzvah is shaped by the traits of the doer; the deed takes on the form of the person’s character.
ואתי שפיר לשון עשוים כנ”ל:
“And thus the expression ‘made’ fits well, as explained above.”
The use of the term ‘made’ highlights that the mitzvah becomes something formed by the person’s inner truth and uprightness.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that mitzvot are ‘made’ through the truth and uprightness of the one who performs them; the deed reflects the inner qualities of the doer.
