Miracles Within Time For תרל”ג 2
“In the book *Kedushat Levi* it is explained that in this time the miracle is renewed every year.”
The Sefat Emet cites the Kedushat Levi, who teaches that the Chanuka miracle is not only remembered but actually renews itself annually.
“This means that a miracle set into time establishes a radiance of holiness within time for all generations, even though every miracle is above time; nevertheless, the root of time and nature is attached to what is above.”
The miracle’s holiness becomes embedded in chronological time, yet its source remains beyond time, since time and nature themselves are rooted in the higher realms.
“A person must believe that there is no change.”
One must trust that divine reality is constant, even when hidden.
“Thus it says: ‘In those days, at this time,’ meaning that all time is one; only now it is concealed in nature, whereas then it rose back to its root.”
The phrase teaches unity of past and present: the miracle-time still exists, though now cloaked in nature, while then it was openly elevated.
“And truly, a miracle that remains attached to time and nature is an even greater wonder.”
A miracle that can dwell within physical reality without breaking it is considered a deeper marvel.
“And perhaps for this reason one flask remained, even though it could have burned miraculously without oil, so that the miracle would have a connection within nature and thus remain forever.”
The presence of physical oil allowed the miracle to anchor itself into the natural order, giving it lasting relevance.
“Through the candles we can discover the hidden radiance in these days, for this is the essence of the commandments—to illuminate and thereby find the hidden light in this world.”
The Chanuka lights reveal concealed spiritual illumination embedded in these days; mitzvot in general uncover such hidden divine light.
“And the mitzvah of the Chanuka light, which is unique to these days, is because there are special lights in these days that require being sought through the candles.”
The candles serve as instruments to search for and awaken the unique spiritual lights of Chanuka.
“And so my grandfather, of blessed memory, said regarding the verse ‘He established a remembrance for His wonders’—that through the mitzvot a remembrance is created to awaken the wonders that occurred in these days.”
Performing the mitzvah activates the spiritual memory of the miracle, reawakening its power in the present.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the Chanuka miracle renews yearly, embedding holy light within time and nature. The candles allow us to uncover this hidden radiance, and the mitzvot serve as vessels that awaken the original miracles into the present moment.
