Hanukkah Light in Exile For תרל”ג 1

(Night 1) The mitzvah of the Chanukah lamp is a small consolation in exile, for it is a remembrance of the Temple menorah.

The Sefat Emet explains that lighting the Chanukah lamp gives Jews, even in exile, a taste of the Temple’s original light and service.

For it is a commandment involving something that was once part of the Temple avodah, and there is no other mitzvah like it.

Unlike other commemorative practices, Chanukah lights directly mirror an actual act of Temple service.

Thus it is, by its nature, a hint and continuation of the Temple service.

The act of lighting becomes a symbolic extension of sacred duties once performed in the Temple.

And therefore we say: “These lights are holy.”

The liturgy reflects this elevated status, declaring the lights inherently sanctified.

And the Ramban wrote that the Midrash’s phrase “yours shall be forever” (in Beha’alotekha) refers to the Chanukah lights.

The Ramban interprets God’s promise to Aaron as granting enduring relevance to the menorah through the Chanukah lamp.

Meaning: Aaron enabled the mitzvah of the menorah to persist as a hint even in exile, through the Chanukah light.

Aaron’s service created a spiritual imprint that allows the menorah’s light to reappear in later generations.

And this endures forever: even amid concealment and hiddenness, there will be illumination from the menorah’s lights.

Even in times of spiritual obscurity, the Chanukah lamp channels the original radiance of the Temple menorah.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Chanukah lights serve as an enduring remnant of the Temple menorah, preserving its holiness and illumination even in exile and spiritual concealment.
