Hidden Divine Spark For תרל”ג 4

(ליל ג) טמאו כל השמנים.

“(Night 3) They defiled all the oils.”

The Sefat Emet begins by noting the complete defilement of the Temple oils, which sets the stage for the miracle.

אף שנשאר פך אחד.

“Even though one cruse remained.”

He emphasizes that one undefiled cruse was left, which itself is surprising after total defilement.

אם הי’ נגנז בקרקע א”ש דלא הי’ בהיכל.

“If it had been buried in the ground, it would be understandable, for then it would not have been in the Sanctuary.”

The text considers a natural explanation—perhaps it was hidden and thus escaped defilement.

אכן נראה שזה באמת הנס אף שטמאו כל השמנים נשאר פך זה ואותו פך שהי’ בנס נתעלה ויצא מן הגשם ולא היה ממשות של שמן.

“However, it seems that this itself was the miracle: even though they defiled all the oils, this cruse remained; and that cruse, being part of the miracle, became elevated and left physicality, and did not contain ordinary material oil.”

The Sefat Emet reframes the situation: the very existence of the cruse is already miraculous and represents a transcendence of physical substance.

וכן כל נס שיוצא מן הגשמיות.

“And so it is with every miracle that departs from physicality.”

All miracles involve a moment where the material is surpassed by a higher divine reality.

וא”ש שהי’ הנס בליל א’ ג”כ שנודע שהי’ למפרע נס בפך זה.

“And this explains that the miracle on the first night as well was the recognition that a prior miracle had already occurred with this cruse.”

The miracle of the first night is the awareness that the cruse itself was already miraculous, independent of its burning.

ואדמו”ז ז”ל אמר שפך זה רמז שלעולם נשאר נקודה בישראל אשר הקב”ה מגין עליה שלא יש שם מגע נכרי.

“And my teacher, of blessed memory, said that this cruse hints that there always remains in Israel a point upon which God protects, so that no foreign touch reaches it.”

The surviving cruse symbolizes the indestructible inner point of holiness in the Jewish people.

וע”ז נאמר מגן אברהם.

“And this is what is meant by ‘Shield of Abraham.’”

God’s protection over that inner point reflects the covenantal shield granted to Abraham.

בחותמו של כ”ג רמז על אברהם אתה כהן כו’ אדם הגדול כו’.

“In the High Priest’s seal there is an allusion to Abraham—‘You are a priest… the great man…’.”

The High Priest’s seal symbolically connects back to Abraham and his foundational holiness.

והוא ג”כ כנ”ל רק שנקודה זו צריכה חיפוש על ידי שאדם מאמין שיש בכל דבר נקודה גנוזה וחופש בכל כחו נמצאת לו.

“And this too is as stated: yet this point requires searching, for a person must believe that in everything there is a hidden point, and by seeking with all his strength he finds it.”

The inner point of holiness must be actively searched for, with faith that it is always present.

וכ”כ בדקו ולא מצאו רק פך אחד מכלל שצריכה חיפוש.

“And so they searched and found only one cruse, which shows that it requires searching.”

The discovery of the single cruse mirrors the spiritual quest for the hidden point.

וזה עצמו נרות חנוכה שמאירין שנוכל למצוא נקודה הגנוזה.

“And this itself is the Hanukkah lights, which shine so that we may find the hidden point.”

The candles illuminate the spiritual search within the world and within oneself.

כי כמו כן בגלות זה נמצא נקודה גנוזה שלא נטמאת כנ”ל.

“For likewise in this exile there exists a hidden point that has not been defiled.”

Even in the darkest exile, an undefiled spark persists.

וכן בנפש כל איש ישראל יש נקודה נשמת אלוה ממעל.

“And so in the soul of every Jew there is a point of the Divine soul from above.”

This universal inner spark connects every Jew to God.

והמצות הם נרות שנוכל למצוא נקודה הנ”ל.

“And the commandments are lights through which we can find that point.”

Mitzvot illuminate the path to rediscover the inner divine spark.

וכ’ נר ה’ נשמת אדם חופש כל חדרי בטן.

“As it is written: ‘The candle of God is the human soul, searching all the chambers of the belly.’”

The soul itself, like a candle, searches inwardly for truth.

ובזמן זה שיש מצוה בנרות נפתחים כל דברים שנקראים נרות כי כן הם ענין המצות שכל דבר שיש לו אחיזה בהמצוה בשם או ברמז יש לו עלי’ ע”י המצוה.

“And at this time, when there is a commandment of lights, everything that is called a ‘light’ is opened, for such is the nature of the commandments: anything that has a connection to the mitzvah, by name or by hint, receives elevation through the mitzvah.”

During Hanukkah, anything associated with light becomes spiritually elevated.

וז”ש דרושים לכל חפציהם.

“And this is what is meant by: ‘They are sought for all their needs.’”

The lights serve many spiritual functions, opening and elevating hidden aspects of reality.

The Sefat Emet teaches that the surviving cruse of oil represents the indestructible divine point within Israel and within every soul. Miracles arise from transcending physicality, and Hanukkah lights reveal and elevate the hidden spark present even in exile.
