Truth as Divine Connection Vayishlach תרנ”ח 2
בפסוק קטנתי כו’ ומכל האמת כו’.
“In the verse ‘I am unworthy…’ and ‘from all the truth…’.”
The Sefat Emet introduces his reading of Jacob’s words, focusing on the theme of truth.
דכתיב תתן אמת ליעקב והוא מתנה מן השמים כי עוה”ז עלמא דשיקרא.
As it is written: “You give truth to Jacob,” and this is a gift from heaven, for this world is a world of falsehood.
Truth is not natural to the physical world; it must be bestowed from above.
ואיתא במדרש חותמו של הקב”ה אמת.
And it is stated in the Midrash: “The seal of the Holy One is truth.”
Truth reflects the divine imprint in creation.
לכן מי שיש בו בחי’ אמת הרי זה עדות שיש בו כח אלקות כמ”ש חז”ל אין אמת אלא תורה.
Therefore, one who possesses an aspect of truth bears testimony that he contains divine power, as the Sages said: “There is no truth except Torah.”
Authentic truth is a sign of inner connection to God and is accessed through Torah.
פי’ שא”א להשיג דבר אמת רק בכח התורה.
Meaning: it is impossible to attain anything truly truthful except through the power of the Torah.
The human mind alone cannot reach pure truth.
וכל מעשה האדם א”א להיות אמת בלי שפת שקר ופני’ ונגיעה רק בכח התורה.
And none of a person’s actions can be true—free of false speech, ulterior motives, and self-interest—except through the power of the Torah.
Torah purifies intention and ensures sincerity in action.
לכן בנ”י כתיב בהם אנכי נטעתיך שורק כולו זרע אמת.
Therefore it is written of Israel: “I planted you as a choice vine, entirely a seed of truth.”
The nature of Israel is rooted in divine truth.
בכח ברית מילה.
Through the power of the covenant of circumcision.
Bris milah embeds truth physically into the body.
ובכח ברית הלשון ע”י התורה זכו לשפת אמת.
And through the covenant of the tongue—through Torah—they merited a tongue of truth.
Speech becomes aligned with truth through Torah study.
ושניהם נקראו ברית. המעור והלשון.
And both are called “covenant”: the flesh and the tongue.
Both physical and verbal covenants testify to one’s bond with God.
שהם עדות שיש להם התקשרות באלקים אמת.
For they are testimony that one has a connection to the God of truth.
These covenants reveal a living link to divine truth.
ויעקב נטע נטיעה זו של אמת בבני ישראל.
And Jacob planted this planting of truth within the Children of Israel.
Jacob’s spiritual legacy is the attribute of truth.
וז”ש קטנתי כו’ שהוא הי’ איש אמת.
And this is the meaning of “I am unworthy,” for he was a man of truth.
His humility stemmed from deep sincerity.
אבל רצה שיהי’ נשאר כח אמת בזרעו אחריו.
But he desired that the power of truth remain in his descendants after him.
His concern was the perpetuation of truth across generations.
ועתה הייתי לשני מחנות.
“And now I have become two camps.”
Jacob feared fragmentation that might weaken this truth.
וירא שלא יתערב בהם שפת שקר.
And he feared lest false speech become mixed among them.
Division risks the infiltration of untruth.
אבל באמת זה עצמו בחי’ אמת שאין לו סוף וגבול.
But in truth, this itself is a dimension of truth that has no end or boundary.
Truth’s divine nature transcends limitation; it ultimately endures despite fragmentation.
ולפי שהי’ בו נקודה של אמת והיא נחלה בלי מצרים כמ”ש שפת אמת תכון לעד נשאר בבניו עד סוף כל הדורות.
And because he possessed a point of truth—which is an inheritance without borders, as it is said: “The lip of truth shall stand forever”—it remained in his children to the end of all generations.
The essential truth Jacob carried is eternal and remains intact within Israel.
