Vayechi

Further on the above verse: “Assemble yourselves and I will tell; gather and listen.”

The Sefat Emet continues to explain the layered meaning within Jacob’s call to his sons to assemble and listen.

And it was already written elsewhere that “assemble yourselves” refers to the soul, for the term ‘asifah’ (gathering) is said regarding souls, as in “gathered to my people.”

The word “asifah” signals the inward, spiritual gathering connected to the soul’s return to its root.

And this reflects the level of standing in prayer; therefore we precede it with “and my mouth will declare Your praise,” for prayer draws down divine flow from above.

The spiritual gathering of the soul manifests in the stance of prayer, which serves to draw divine influence downward.

This is the meaning of “and I will tell you.”

Jacob’s “telling” corresponds to the revelation that descends through prayer.

“Gather yourselves” refers to the unification of the bodies.

This gathering is physical unity, distinct from the soul-level gathering implied earlier.

And this is the Shema.

The bodily unification corresponds to the recitation of Shema.

The 248 words correspond to the 248 limbs.

The Shema’s structure mirrors the physical human form, underscoring bodily unity in divine service.

“And listen” is the Shema, for every Jew must engage daily in these two aspects of unity—of body and of soul.

Jacob’s phrasing points to the daily spiritual discipline of unifying both dimensions of human existence.

And behold, the order is Shema followed by prayer.

Halachic practice reflects this two-step progression: bodily unity first, then soulful ascent.

And Jacob began with “assemble yourselves,” for he thought they were ready for a higher level.

Jacob presumed his sons were spiritually prepared for soul-level unity.

But when the Divine Presence withdrew from him, he saw they were on a lower level, and he said, “gather and listen.”

Realizing their true spiritual state, Jacob shifted to the more accessible path of bodily unity and attentive listening.

Summary: The Sefat Emet distinguishes between soul-level “assembling” aligned with prayer and body-level “gathering” aligned with Shema, showing how Jacob’s shifting words reflect his sons’ spiritual readiness.
