Miracles in Exile For תרל”ג 7

(ליל ח) מה שמקשין אמאי לא משגיחין בחנוכה ופורים לספיקא דיומא.

“(Night 8) They ask: why do we not take notice of a doubt of the day (safek yom) for Chanuka and Purim?”

The Sefat Emet begins by addressing the well‑known question: unlike biblical festivals, Chanuka and Purim do not observe two days in the diaspora despite the usual rule of uncertainty regarding the correct calendar date.

נראה כי בכל יו”ט צריך להיות בגלות ב’ ימים כמ”ש במק”א שאין לנו כח לקבל הארת היו”ט וצריכין יום ב’ לקבל יום א’.

“It seems that for every festival one must, in exile, have two days, as explained elsewhere: we do not have the strength to receive the illumination of the festival, and therefore we need a second day to receive what should have been received on the first.”

He explains that the two‑day observance in exile is not only a technical calendar uncertainty but a spiritual limitation: the Jewish people outside the Land lack the capacity to absorb the full divine light of the festival in a single day, so an additional day compensates for this spiritual deficiency.

“Therefore, these days on which the miracle occurred in exile, and which are closer to us than all the Torah‑mandated festivals, shine with a light that we too are able to receive, and thus the doubt of exile is clarified in these days, as stated above.”

Because the miracles of Chanuka and Purim took place in exile, their spiritual light is more accessible to those living in exile. We can fully receive their illumination in one day, so the spiritual deficiency that necessitates two days for biblical festivals does not apply. Thus, the diaspora’s ‘doubt’ is resolved during these days.

Summary: Biblical festivals require two days in exile due to our limited capacity to receive their spiritual light. But Chanuka and Purim, whose miracles occurred in exile, bring a light closer to us, enabling full reception in a single day and eliminating the need for a second day.
