Renewal Through Hanukkah Light For תרל”ג 6
“(Night 7) The mitzvah of the Hanukkah lamp is at the opening, as it is said: a mezuzah on the right, etc.”
The Sefat Emet begins by connecting the placement of the Hanukkah lamp at the doorway with the mezuzah, framing Hanukkah as a spiritual gateway.
“For wherever there is an opening in a person’s heart, there immediately appear the good and evil inclinations, as it is said: ‘Sin crouches at the opening.’”
Any moment of inner openness invites both uplift and danger; spiritual entry points demand vigilance.
“And the miracle of Hanukkah, which occurred within concealment and exile, helps to drive away the evil inclination, as it is said: ‘The wicked were delivered into the hands of the righteous.’”
The miracle strengthens inner purity, enabling the righteous impulse to overpower the forces of distortion.
“And commentators ask: what is the novelty? That many fell before few is understandable, etc.”
The usual explanation of the miracle—few defeating many—does not fully satisfy the Sefat Emet’s question.
“But it appears as stated regarding one who conquers his inclination—that it was in God’s power to drive away the wicked.”
God could have removed evil directly, just as a person might wish their inner struggles simply erased.
“But He delivered them into the hands of the righteous, as above.”
Instead, God grants humans the merit of overcoming darkness themselves, ennobling the struggle.
“And this is the meaning of the Hanukkah lamp on the left, as above.”
The left side symbolizes confronting the place of struggle and transforming it into light.
“And so at the time of Rosh Chodesh Tevet, for these days belong to Esau, as stated in the Zohar.”
This period has a spiritual challenge associated with the forces represented by Esau.
“But Hanukkah draws these days toward holiness, for the month follows its Rosh Chodesh.”
Hanukkah elevates even spiritually difficult days, pulling the entire month toward holiness.
“And on Hanukkah each person can take himself anew to God.”
The festival grants an opportunity for renewal and recommitment.
“And this is the meaning of ‘Hanukkah’—from the word ‘dedication’—for then everything had been defiled, yet it was purified through a miracle.”
The name of the festival signals its essence: the power to rededicate what has been contaminated and restore it to purity.
Summary: Hanukkah illuminates inner openings where good and evil contend, empowering the righteous impulse to prevail. The miracle grants humans the merit of overcoming darkness, elevates challenging days, and offers renewal and rededication to holiness.
