Spiritual Struggle for Truth Vayishlach
“Regarding the verse ‘And a man wrestled with him,’ the Sages said that they raised dust up to the Throne of Glory.”
The Sefat Emet teaches that the struggle between Jacob and the angel was so spiritually intense that its effects reached the highest realms.
“The explanation is that all the nations receive their spiritual flow through ministering angels above, while Israel is ‘the portion of Hashem.’”
Other nations receive divine influence indirectly through angels, whereas Israel’s connection to God is direct.
“Thus Jacob our father needed to have ascendancy over the supernal ministering angels.”
Jacob’s spiritual stature required him to rise higher than the angels who guide the nations.
“And this was the struggle—to see, for each one, how far his power reached.”
The wrestling match was a test of spiritual capacity between Jacob and the angel.
“Thus it says (in Rashi’s gloss) that ‘wrestled’ is related to ‘binding,’ as the Midrash says: ‘From him you are afraid? I am entirely fire…’”
The Sefat Emet cites the Midrash to show that the angel questions Jacob’s ability, boasting of its fiery nature.
“For truly, a complete human being is higher than an angel—if he is a man of truth.”
The Sefat Emet states a core idea: the perfected human surpasses even angels, provided he embodies absolute truth.
“Therefore Jacob, of whom it is said ‘You will give truth to Jacob,’ rose above the angel in actual fact.”
Because Jacob personifies truth, he ultimately prevails over the angel and attains higher spiritual elevation.
Summary: The struggle with the angel reveals Jacob’s ascent above the ministering angels who guide the nations. As the embodiment of truth, Jacob’s spiritual stature surpasses even that of angels, manifesting fully in his victory.
