Nullifying Forces Opposing Kedushah
בפ' זכר נא כו' גם בגמ' בקשו לקבוע פ' בלק בק"ש בכל יום
On the verse "Remember now" (Michah 6:5), and likewise in the Gemara, they sought to establish the parsha of Balak as part of the recitation of Krias Shema each day.
The Sfas Emes notes that Chazal considered including the parsha of Balak in the daily Krias Shema, because of the great lesson contained in it.
For a person must be strong in the avodah of Hashem Yisbarach, to believe that even all the forces of the Sitra Achra and all those who oppose kedushah are entirely nullified before the will of the Holy One, Blessed is He; this is so only when a person walks in the way of emes, for behold Bilam against his will blessed Bnei Yisrael, in the manner of what is written, "against his will he answers amen," and this matter applies in every era to every Jew against whom evil schemes are devised, and concerning this we ask, "Frustrate their counsel," and so on.
A Jew must hold firm in his avodah and trust that every force opposing kedushah is ultimately powerless before Hashem's will, just as Bilam was compelled against his own will to bless Bnei Yisrael rather than curse them.
Summary: The Sfas Emes opens with the teaching that Chazal sought to incorporate the parsha of Balak into the daily Krias Shema. The reason is that this parsha embodies a fundamental yesod in the avodah of Hashem: a person must remain strong and believe that even the forces of the Sitra Achra and all who oppose kedushah are completely nullified before the will of the Holy One, Blessed is He. This is realized when a Jew walks steadfastly in the way of emes, for Bilam himself was forced against his will to bless Bnei Yisrael, just as one is compelled against his will to answer amen. This applies in every generation to every Jew against whom wicked schemes are plotted, and it is the basis for our tefillah that Hashem frustrate their counsel and nullify their evil designs.
