Bnei Yisrael as Hashem's witnesses
testimony · Shabbos · space and time · olam shanah nefesh · Bamidbar
In the Midrash: "Your righteousness..." — on what day, what month, what place...
The Sefas Emes opens with a Midrash that ties the verse praising Hashem's righteousness to the careful examination of witnesses, who must specify exactly when and where an event occurred.
For behold, Bnei Yisrael were created in order to clarify and to bear witness to the Creator, blessed is He and blessed is His Name.
The very purpose of Bnei Yisrael is to serve as Hashem's witnesses, making His presence clear and known in the world.
And it is written: "You are My witnesses, and I am God" (Yeshayahu 43:12).
He cites the pasuk in which Hashem calls Bnei Yisrael His witnesses, making their testimony part of the very revelation of His Godliness.
In the Midrash: as it were, "If you are not My witnesses, I am not..."
The Midrash daringly says that, so to speak, Hashem's recognition in the world depends on Bnei Yisrael bearing witness to Him.
And the witnesses are examined with seven inquiries: on what day, in what place, and so on.
In a court of law, witnesses must be cross-examined with precise questions of time and place before their testimony can be accepted.
For one cannot be a witness...
A person cannot validly testify...
...until the matter is clear from every angle.
...unless the matter he attests to is completely clarified and verified in every respect.
Therefore Bnei Yisrael need to rectify all these places that require clarification.
Since their mission is to testify, Bnei Yisrael must refine and bring clarity to every place and circumstance, so that Hashem's presence becomes evident there.
And in truth, the weekdays and Shabbos are the matter mentioned above.
The relationship between the workdays and Shabbos parallels this idea of investigation followed by testimony.
For Shabbos is called "testimony," and the weekdays are the inquiry — for just as one rectifies the weekdays, so will he bring forth his testimony into the light on Shabbos Kodesh.
The six workdays are like the cross-examination — the avodah of clarifying the world — and Shabbos is the testimony, when the truth that was refined during the week is brought out into the open and Hashem's presence is proclaimed.
As in the saying: "Whoever toiled on the eve of Shabbos will eat on Shabbos" (Avodah Zarah 3a).
He invokes the well-known teaching that only one who labors before Shabbos has what to enjoy on Shabbos — the testimony of Shabbos rests on the work of the weekdays.
Therefore all the deeds of the Torah and of Bnei Yisrael are clarified and made public in place and time, in order to rectify the world and time.
Every mitzvah is anchored in a specific time and place precisely so that, like valid testimony, it brings clarity and rectification to the dimensions of space and time.
As I have written elsewhere, that this is the foundation of everything: olam (world/space), shanah (year/time), nefesh (soul).
He references the Sefer Yetzirah framework of the three dimensions of creation — space, time, and soul — as the foundation underlying all of this.
And the souls of Bnei Yisrael rectify the world (space) and time.
The neshamos of Bnei Yisrael — the dimension of nefesh — are the active force that refines and rectifies the dimensions of space and time, fulfilling their role as Hashem's witnesses.
Summary: Bnei Yisrael were created to be Hashem's witnesses, and just as a witness must clarify the exact time and place of what he saw, so must Bnei Yisrael bring clarity to every place and moment. The weekdays are the "investigation" and Shabbos is the "testimony"; through anchoring every mitzvah in space and time, the souls of Bnei Yisrael rectify the three dimensions of creation — olam, shanah, and nefesh.
