Torah reveals the hidden good

בגמ' א"ר יוסף אי לאו האי יומא כמה יוסף איכא בשוקא.
In the Gemara, Rav Yosef said: "Were it not for this day [that I learned Torah], how many 'Yosefs' would there be in the marketplace!"
Rav Yosef declared that if not for the day of Mattan Torah — the day Torah was given and which made him into a Torah scholar — he would have been just one more ordinary man among the many in the market (Pesachim 68b).
וקשה אדרבה לא הי' ר' יוסף כזה נמצא כלל.
This is difficult: on the contrary, a Rav Yosef like this would not have existed at all!
The Sefas Emes questions the phrasing. If there were many anonymous "Yosefs" in the market, that implies he would have been mediocre — yet the truth is that without Torah a man of his greatness would not have emerged in any form. So why speak of "many Yosefs"?
וי"ל כי קודם נתינת התורה ודאי הי' ג"כ הטוב נגנז רק שבמתן תורה נתגלה ונפרש הטוב מרע שלא יהי' מעורב.
One may answer that even before the giving of the Torah the good was certainly present, only hidden; it was at Mattan Torah that the good became revealed and separated out from the evil, so that it would no longer be intermingled.
The good potential within Rav Yosef existed all along, but it lay concealed and mixed together with lesser qualities. Mattan Torah did not create his greatness from nothing — it drew out the hidden good and distinguished it cleanly from the bad. The "many Yosefs in the market" are the unrefined states in which his good remained buried; the Torah revealed and purified it.

A closing invitation to reflect: the Torah's gift is the power to reveal and separate the latent good within a person, not merely to add something external.
Summary: Rav Yosef's greatness was latent within him even before Sinai, but concealed and entangled with the lower self. Mattan Torah is what revealed the hidden good and separated it from the evil — the Torah's role is to draw out and refine the good already present within Bnei Yisrael.
