Weaving the letters of Torah through speech
na'aseh · twenty-two letters · Torah she-be'al peh · Betzalel · power of speech
"All that Hashem has spoken, we shall do" (Shemos 19:8).
The Sefas Emes hears in na'aseh ("we shall do") not merely obedience but an act of making — Bnei Yisrael are partners in bringing the Torah into completed form.
The explanation: "doing" connotes tikkun (perfecting), for Bnei Yisrael must perfect the words of Torah.
The "doing" of na'aseh is the work of completing and refining Torah — the words of Torah are given to Yisrael to be brought to their finished form.
Hashem gave the twenty-two letters of the Torah, and with them Bnei Yisrael build and combine, making from them words and structures — like the saying of Chazal about Betzalel, that he knew how to combine the letters [with which heaven and earth were created] (Berachos 55a); and this is "those who do His word" (Tehillim 103:20).
Hashem supplies the raw letters; Bnei Yisrael are the craftsmen who join them into words and meaning, just as Betzalel built the Mishkan through the combining of letters. This is the avodah of "doers of His word."
And in the Midrash, Bnei Yisrael are compared to the worm that weaves silk with its mouth; so too the strength of Yisrael is in the mouth.
Just as the silkworm spins its thread from its own mouth, the unique power of Bnei Yisrael lies in the mouth — in the spoken words of Torah and tefillah.
And it is written, "She seeks wool... and works it with the desire of her hands" (Mishlei 31:13) — for it falls to the woman to spin the wool; and Bnei Yisrael go further, to draw down these letters from Hashem and to meditate upon them, and this is Torah she-be'al peh (the Oral Torah) — that is, one who rules over his mouth, his strength being in his mouth, to weave the letters of the Torah.
As the eishes chayil spins wool into cloth, Bnei Yisrael draw the letters down from Hashem and weave them through speech. This is the deeper sense of Torah she-be'al peh — Torah of the mouth — given to one who masters his mouth and uses its power to weave Torah.
Summary: Na'aseh — "we shall do" — means that Bnei Yisrael perfect the Torah. Hashem provides the twenty-two letters as raw material, and Yisrael, like the silkworm spinning from its mouth or the eishes chayil spinning wool, weave those letters into words through the power of speech. This is the essence of Torah she-be'al peh: mastering the mouth to weave the letters of Torah.
