Yiras Hashem precedes and preserves wisdom
Shavuos · yiras Hashem · wisdom · Kabbalas HaTorah · yiras cheit
On the pasuk "the earth feared and was still" (Tehillim 76:9), it is brought in the Midrash: first it feared, and afterward it was still — for it said, "Adam HaRishon was commanded one mitzvah and sinned," etc.
The earth first trembled with fear at the giving of the Torah, recalling that even Adam, with but one command, sinned; only afterward did it grow calm.
And the matter is understood according to the Mishnah: "anyone whose fear of sin precedes his wisdom, his wisdom endures" — that a person must place yirah (fear) first, lest he come to sin through wisdom, as it is written, "in much wisdom is much vexation" (Koheles 1:18).
The earth's "fear before stillness" embodies the principle that yiras cheit must come before wisdom; otherwise wisdom itself can lead one to stumble, as more wisdom can bring more vexation.
What is "much wisdom"?
He pauses to define what the verse means by an excess of wisdom.
It is that one's wisdom should not exceed his deeds.
"Too much wisdom" means wisdom that outstrips one's deeds — knowledge unanchored in action, which leads to vexation and sin.
And therefore this is the preparation before receiving the Torah: "from heaven You made judgment heard" (Tehillim 76:9), the earth feared — so that they should not come, through wisdom, to sin.
The earth's fear was the necessary hadrachah before Kabbalas HaTorah: instilling yirah first, so that the wisdom of Torah would not become a path to sin.
And therefore it was still, and the wisdom endured, as is said in the Gemara, "the fear of Hashem... is his treasure" — for it is the vessel in which wisdom is received, to be an enduring thing.
Once yirah was established, the earth quieted and Torah-wisdom could endure, for yiras Hashem is the very vessel that holds and preserves wisdom.
And therefore the Gemara compares it to a kav of chumton (a preservative measure of sandy salt) — see there.
Yirah is likened to the small measure of preservative salt added to grain to keep it from spoiling — it safeguards the wisdom.
However, they further said there: "Woe to one who has no courtyard, yet makes a gate for the courtyard!"
The Gemara adds a sharp barb: it is foolish to build a gate (yirah) when one has no courtyard (wisdom) for it to guard.
And this requires explanation, for seemingly it appears that all of wisdom is only in order to come to yirah; if so, what is meant by "his wisdom endures," which implies that wisdom is the essential thing?
There is a tension: if yirah is the goal and wisdom merely the means, why does the Mishnah speak of wisdom "enduring" as if wisdom were the main point?
But the explanation is that certainly the purpose of man is to be a yirei Hashem (one who fears Hashem), and "God made it so that they fear before Him" (Koheles 3:14).
The ultimate tachlis of a person truly is to attain yiras Hashem — that is the goal of creation.
However, the Torah teaches a person.
Yet Torah-wisdom still has an indispensable teaching role.
The inner gates that exist within yiras Hashem.
Torah opens up the deeper, inner chambers and gradations contained within the fear of Hashem.
And all of the learning and wisdom is to become wise in yiras Hashem.
The entire purpose of Torah-study is to grow ever wiser and deeper within the fear of Hashem itself.
For there are many levels in yiras Hashem.
Yirah is not one flat thing but an ascending range of many levels.
And one who places his fear of sin before his wisdom — his wisdom then teaches him to be a yirei Hashem; for wisdom encompasses everything, and every person grows wise in that with which he occupies himself, and the one who fears grows wise in his yirah — and this is the essence.
When yiras cheit comes first, one's Torah-wisdom is channeled entirely into deepening one's yirah. Wisdom takes the shape of whatever a person is devoted to; the one rooted in fear uses all his wisdom to become ever wiser in the fear of Hashem — and that is the whole point.
Summary: The earth "feared and then was still" because yiras cheit must precede wisdom, lest Torah-wisdom that outstrips one's deeds lead to sin; once yirah is established, wisdom endures, for yiras Hashem is the vessel that preserves wisdom — like preservative salt in grain. Resolving the tension of "a gate without a courtyard," the Sefas Emes teaches that the tachlis is indeed yiras Hashem, but Torah is needed to reveal its many inner levels: when fear comes first, all of one's wisdom is devoted to growing ever wiser within the fear of Hashem itself.
