Shechinah in Exile as Ever‑Present Light
Shechinah · Exile · Ner Ma'aravi · Chanukah · Holiness
“In the Gemara: ‘Outside the curtain of the Testimony…’”
The Sefat Emet opens by citing the Talmudic phrase about the Menorah standing outside the Parochet of the Testimony.
“It is testimony to all who enter the world that the Shekhinah rests upon Israel.”
This teaches that the Menorah serves as a sign to the world that God’s presence dwells among Israel.
“The western lamp: from it he would light, and with it he would finish.”
The western lamp functioned as the source and completion of all lighting, symbolizing a point of constant divine illumination.
“Know that the main thing Israel must know for strength in exile is that God is our light, as it is said that, so to speak, the Shekhinah is with Israel in exile.”
The essential foundation of spiritual endurance in exile is the awareness that God remains our light and that His presence accompanies Israel even in displacement.
“And when the miracle of the Menorah occurred, though there was no oil to kindle—hinting that the preparation of those who light it was lacking—nevertheless it burned miraculously, and this is testimony that the Shekhinah rests upon Israel.”
The Chanukah miracle shows that even when human readiness is incomplete, God supplies light, revealing His continuing presence.
“For even in dark places and in all the exiles where Israel was sent, they found there the light of holiness.”
Wherever Israel is exiled, a spark of divine holiness accompanies them.
“And this is testimony that within them is a holy point from God.”
The constant presence of light indicates that every Jew contains an inner divine point.
“And this is called the western lamp: that point which descended with Israel into all dark places.”
The western lamp symbolizes the indestructible spark that follows Israel everywhere.
“And in the language of the Zohar it is called a non-illuminating ‘speculum,’ yet it contains everything.”
This point may appear dark, but spiritually it contains all higher light.
“As it is said: from it he would light, and with it he would finish.”
The western lamp is the source and completion, symbolizing the root of holiness in Israel.
“For the point of the kingdom of Heaven within Israel includes everything from beginning to end.”
The inner point of Malchut within every Jew spans all spiritual levels.
“And about this it is said: ‘The beginning of wisdom is fear of God.’”
The root of all wisdom is this point of divine awe.
“And it is said: ‘The end of the matter, everything having been heard: fear God…’”
Both the beginning and end of spiritual pursuit rest upon this inner point of awe.
“And about it is said: ‘The eyes of the Lord your God are upon it from the beginning… to the end…’”
This divine point is constantly watched and sustained by God.
“And when they emerged from under the hand of the wicked Greek kingdom, the resting of the Shekhinah upon Israel was renewed.”
The victory over Greece restored and intensified the presence of God among Israel.
“Therefore the miracle was performed in the Menorah, like the western lamp—it is testimony…”
The Chanukah miracle served as renewed evidence of divine presence.
“And understand this well.”
A call to grasp the depth of the teaching: the unbroken divine point within Israel.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the Chanukah miracle reveals the eternal divine point—symbolized by the western lamp—that accompanies Israel in every exile, providing hidden light even when human preparation is lacking. This inner point spans all spiritual levels and is renewed through redemption.
