Divine Presence in Every Home

The mezuzah is on the right, and the Chanukah light is on the left.

The Sefat Emet opens with the symbolic positioning of mezuzah and Chanukah light, signaling complementary forms of holiness surrounding the Jewish home.

דאיתא בגמרא בפסוק מחוץ לפרוכת העדות יערוך עדות הוא שהשכינה שורה בישראל.

As stated in the Gemara on the verse “Outside the curtain of testimony he shall set it,” this is testimony that the Divine Presence dwells among Israel.

The verse about the Menorah is read as testimony that God’s presence rests with Israel.

כי ע"י התורה זכו בני ישראל להשראת השכינה כדאיתא במדרש תרומה לקח טוב נתתי שהמוכר נמכר עמו כו'.

For through the Torah Israel merited the resting of the Shechinah, as the Midrash teaches: “A good acquisition I have given you,” meaning the Seller is sold with it.

Receiving the Torah brings with it God’s accompanying presence.

וכיון שהתורה נשארה תמיד בישראל הגם שבזמן המקדש היה מתגלה פנימיות התורה ולכן היתה השכינה במקדש בהתגלות ומ"מ לעולם התורה נשארה בישראל ממילא יש ג"כ ענין שכינה בישראל כמ"ש חז"ל גלו לבבל שכינה עמהם כו'.

And since the Torah always remained with Israel—even though in the Temple its inner dimension was revealed, and therefore the Shechinah appeared openly—nevertheless the Torah always stayed with Israel, and thus there is always an aspect of the Shechinah with Israel, as the Sages said: “They were exiled to Babylonia, and the Shechinah went with them.”

Even outside the Temple, Torah ensures ongoing Divine presence among the people.

וכמו שבעת שנכנסו היונים להיכל נסתלקה הקדושה כמ"ש ובאו בה פרוצים וחללוה.

And just as when the Greeks entered the Sanctuary the holiness departed, as it says: “The lawless entered it and defiled it.”

Foreign intrusion disrupts holiness, as seen in the Greek desecration.

כמו כן ע"י עבודת בני ישראל בתורה ומצות יכולין להמשיך הקדושה בכל מקום שהם.

So too, through Israel’s service in Torah and commandments, they can draw holiness wherever they are.

Holiness is restored through Israel’s spiritual effort.

וכמו שהי' לוחות העדות בפנים ומנורה סמוכה לפרוכת העדות.

And just as the Tablets of Testimony were inside, and the Menorah was near the curtain of testimony.

The Temple’s arrangement symbolized inner and outer layers of divine testimony.

כן הנר חנוכה אצל המזוזה שהוא עדות שנתן הקב"ה לבנ"י שבכל דירה מישראל נמצא נקודה קדושה.

So too, the Chanukah light beside the mezuzah is testimony that God gave Israel: that in every Jewish dwelling there is a point of holiness.

The home itself becomes a sanctuary through mezuzah and Chanukah light.

וקבע להם פרשה שבתורה אצל הפתח ובכח עדות זה יש נר חנוכה בשמאל.

And God set a Torah passage at their doorway, and through this testimony the Chanukah light is placed on the left.

The mezuzah’s Torah text empowers the Chanukah light to complete the home’s testimony.

ומצינו בנרצע והגישו אל הדלת ומזוזה.

And we find regarding the Hebrew slave: “He shall bring him to the door and the mezuzah.”

The door and mezuzah serve as witnesses in covenantal moments.

ואמרו חז"ל דלו"מ שהיו עדים שאמרתי לי בני ישראל עבדים וזה קנה אדון לעצמו ירצע בפניהם.

And the Sages said: These were witnesses that I declared, “Israel are My servants,” yet this one acquired a master for himself—therefore his ear is pierced before them.

The mezuzah symbolizes that Israel belongs only to God.

ומדה טובה מרובה ובנ"י שמקבלין בכל יום מלכות שמים ומצפין לצאת משעבוד מלכיות לקבל עול מלכותו ית' בלבד קבע להם הקב"ה זה העדות במזוזה.

And since goodness is greater than punishment, and Israel daily accepts Heaven’s kingship and longs to leave foreign rule to accept solely God’s rule, God established this testimony for them in the mezuzah.

The mezuzah affirms Israel’s ongoing loyalty to God even in exile.

ולכן בחנוכה שיצאו ממלכות יון וזכינו להיות נקראים עבדי ה' ולא עבדי יון קבעו מצות נ"ח בפתח כנ"ל.

Therefore, on Chanukah, when they emerged from Greek rule and merited to be called servants of God and not servants of Greece, they established the mitzvah of Chanukah lights at the doorway, as explained above.

Chanukah reaffirms Israel’s freedom to serve only God, symbolized in the placement of the lights at the entrance.

Summary: Mezuzah and Chanukah light function as dual testimonies that the Jewish home contains enduring holiness, expressing Israel’s covenant with God and liberation from foreign rule.
