בפסוק אנכי ארד עמך מצרימה ואנכי אעלך.

“In the verse: ‘I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up.’”

The Sefat Emet begins by highlighting the two divine assurances: descent with Israel and ascent from exile.

הם ב' הבטחות להיות עם בנ"י בגלות ולגאול אותם.

“These are two promises: to be with Israel in exile and to redeem them.”

He clarifies that the verse encodes accompaniment in suffering and eventual deliverance.

ועל ב' אלו כתיב בכל צרתם לו צר בו' ובא'.

“And regarding these two, it is written: ‘In all their affliction, He is afflicted,’ with a vav and with an alef.”

The dual spelling hints at two modes of divine connection, one within exile and one beyond it.

לו צר בו' הוא הסיוע בגלות והוא בחי' ששת ימי המעשה.

“‘Lo tzar’ with a vav refers to assistance in exile, which corresponds to the six weekdays.”

This form emphasizes divine companionship within the realm of labor and limitation.

לא בא' הוא הגאולה בחי' השבת נחלה בלי מצרים.

“‘Lo’ with an alef refers to redemption, the aspect of Shabbat, an inheritance without boundaries.”

The Shabbat dimension transcends constriction, hinting at the future redemption.

וב' אלו הבחי' קיבלו יהודה ויוסף.

“These two aspects were received by Judah and Joseph.”

Each patriarchal figure embodies one side of the divine dynamic.

יהודה ארד עמך כמ"ש ויהודה עוד רד עם אל.

“Judah corresponds to ‘I will go down with you,’ as it says: ‘And Judah still descends with God.’”

Judah aligns with the descent into weekday action and guidance.

ויוסף הוא בחי' הגאולה אנכי אעלך כמ"ש מי יעלה לנו השמימה ר"ת מילה.

“And Joseph embodies redemption—‘I will bring you up’—as in ‘Who shall ascend for us to heaven,’ whose initials spell ‘milah.’”

Joseph is linked to ascent, purity, and opening channels upward.

וב' אלו הבחי' מתחדשים בכל השבתות כי בימי החול הקדושה מתלבשת בעשי' בחי' ארד עמך.

“These two aspects renew themselves every Shabbat, for on weekdays holiness clothes itself in action—the aspect of ‘I will go down with you.’”

The rhythm of the week reenacts descent into labor and the concealment of holiness.

ובשבת מתעלה איזה נקודה שיש בחי' גאולה בכל שבת ושבת.

“And on Shabbat a point ascends, for there is an aspect of redemption in every Shabbat.”

Shabbat elevates the hidden spark planted during the week.

והם ב' הבחי' הקול קול יעקב קול תורה ותפלה.

“These are the two aspects: the voice of Jacob — the voice of Torah and prayer.”

The redemptive dynamic expresses itself as spiritual articulation and devotion.

ולפי ששבת בחי' קול תורה כמ"ש יעשה כולו תורה לכן ממעטין בו התפלה שבכל יום י"ח ובשבת ז' ברכות.

“And since Shabbat is the aspect of the voice of Torah—‘it shall be entirely Torah’—therefore prayer is reduced: eighteen blessings on weekdays, seven on Shabbat.”

Shabbat’s elevated Torah-energy requires less petitionary prayer.

והנה יוסף ושבת הוא בחי' תוספת נשמה יתירה וזה שאמר יעקב רב עוד יוסף בני חי.

“Joseph and Shabbat represent the added soul, and this is why Jacob said: ‘Enough—Joseph my son is still alive.’”

Both Joseph and Shabbat convey surplus life-force.

וכ"כ עודך חי כי עוד הוא לשון תוספות כמ"ש ויבך על צוארו עוד פרש"י הרבות בכי.

“Similarly: ‘Are you still alive?’ for ‘od’ means addition, as in ‘and he wept on his neck, od—meaning abundant weeping.’”

The word ‘od’ signals overflow and increase.

וכן שם יוסף על התוספות.

“Thus the name Joseph relates to increase.”

His very identity encodes the energy of expansion.

כי ימי שנותינו שבעים שנה ואם בגבורות שמונים.

“For our lifespan is seventy years, and with strength, eighty.”

Earthly life has a measured span.

עו"ד הוא שמונים.

“‘Od’ numerically is eighty.”

Again tying ‘od’ to heightened vitality.

וכן יסוד עולה פ'.

“And so ‘yesod’ equals eighty.”

The sefirah of Yesod channels this overflowing energy.

וכן שם המיוחד לש"ק י"ה אדנ"י עולה יסוד.

“And the special divine name for Shabbat—Yah combined with Adnai—equals Yesod.”

Shabbat taps the same spiritual reservoir as Yesod.

והכל ענין אחד כי הוא הארה מעין עוה"ב בחי' שמינית וכן מילה ביום השמיני.

“All this is one matter, for it is a ray from the World to Come, the eighth dimension; similarly circumcision on the eighth day.”

The number eight signals transcendence beyond natural cycles.

וכן שבת הוא אור שבעת הימים שנמשך תוספות מן השורש למעלה מעולם הטבע.

“So too Shabbat is the light of the seven days, drawing additional illumination from the root above nature.”

Shabbat channels supernal overflow into the created realm.

והוא בחי' הגאולה.

“And this is the aspect of redemption.”

Redemption is the revelation of this transcendent light.

והנה יש לתמוה כי יוסף אמר וכלכלתי אותך כו' פן תורש אתה וביתך.

“One might wonder: Joseph said, ‘I will sustain you… lest you become impoverished.’”

This appears presumptuous in relation to his father.

והיתכן שיחשוב עצמו גדול מאביו.

“Could he consider himself greater than his father?”

The text challenges this notion.

אבל ידע כי בחי' התוספות והעושר צריך להיות על ידו.

“But he knew that the aspect of addition and abundance had to come through him.”

Joseph recognized his role as the channel of surplus blessing.

וכל זמן שהי' יוסף מתכסה מאביו הי' חסר ליעקב אותו התוספות.

“And as long as Joseph was hidden from his father, Jacob lacked that additional element.”

The father’s spiritual fullness depends on the son’s revealed presence.

ואח"כ כתיב ותחי רוח יעקב עי' בזוה"ק.

“Afterward it is written: ‘The spirit of Jacob revived’—see the Zohar.”

The reunion restored Jacob’s expanded vitality.

וכ' בן זקונים הוא לו בר חכים הוא לי'.

“And it is written: ‘A son of his old age’—the Zohar: ‘A wise son is he to me.’”

Joseph’s wisdom deepens Jacob’s own stature.

והוא כמ"ש המחכים את רבו כו'.

“As it says: one who makes his teacher wiser, etc.”

A disciple can elevate the master through refined receptivity.

כאשר היה יוסף מוכן לקבל השפע ע"י יעקב.

“When Joseph was ready to receive the flow through Jacob…”

Joseph’s preparedness enabled reciprocal elevation.

הי' יעקב מתמלא תוספות קדושה וברכה.

“Jacob became filled with additional holiness and blessing.”

The channeling intensified Jacob’s own sanctity.

וגדולה מזה מצינו בכללות בנ"י כפי הכנה שלהם ניתוסף הקדושה בכל המדריגות.

“And greater still: in all Israel, according to their preparation, holiness increases at every level.”

The dynamic of increase applies collectively as well.

כמ"ש תנו עוז לאלקים.

“As it is said: ‘Give strength to God.’”

Human readiness empowers divine revelation.

ואמרו חז"ל ישראל מפרנסין לאביהן שבשמים.

“And the sages said: Israel sustains their Father in Heaven.”

Our devotion provides a vessel for divine flow.

כמ"ש רעיתי פרנסתי.

“As it is written: ‘My companion, My sustenance.’”

Israel is depicted as providing nourishment—meaning receptivity—to the divine.

ע"ש במדרש חזית:

“See there in Midrash Ḥazit.”

The midrash expands this theme of mutuality between God and Israel.

The passage teaches that Judah and Joseph, weekday and Shabbat, exile and redemption, all mirror a rhythm of descent and ascent. Joseph and Shabbat embody surplus illumination—the added soul—which, when revealed, increases holiness for all. Human preparation expands the divine flow, creating a reciprocal relationship between Israel and God.
