בפסוק אנכי ארד עמך הוא הבטחה לדורות כמ"ש עמו אנכי בצרה בכל מקום שגלו שכינה עמהם והוא בזכותו של יעקב לכן אמחז"ל המענג את השבת זוכה לנחלת יעקב בלי מצרים דכתיב בכל צרתם לא צר בו' ובא'.
“In the verse ‘I shall go down with you,’ there is a promise for all generations, as it is written: ‘I am with him in distress’; in every place they were exiled, the Divine Presence was with them, and this is due to the merit of Jacob. Therefore our sages said: One who delights in the Sabbath merits the inheritance of Jacob without boundaries, as it is written: ‘In all their distress, He is not distressed,’ with a vav and with an alef.”
The Sefat Emet teaches that God’s assurance to descend with Israel expresses an eternal principle: the Shekhinah accompanies Israel in all exiles. This closeness originates with Jacob’s spiritual stature. Because Sabbath delight heightens awareness of God’s companionship in suffering, it opens the boundless inheritance associated with Jacob.
פי' כשזוכין שהוא עמנו בצרה ממילא לא צר.
“The explanation is: when we merit that He is with us in distress, then automatically there is no distress.”
When God’s presence is felt within suffering, the suffering itself loses its constriction; awareness of divine accompaniment transforms distress into spaciousness.
ז"ש ביעקב ופרצת ימה כו' שהוא יכול לפרוץ כל המצרים ונכנס בעובי הקורה דכתיב איש תם.
“This is what is said about Jacob: ‘You shall burst forth to the west…,’ meaning he can break through all boundaries, and he enters to the very core, as it is written: ‘A wholesome man.’”
Jacob’s wholeness gives him the capacity to break limitations—spiritual, emotional, or existential—and to penetrate to the essence of every realm.
ובזוה"ק תם כשעובר כל המדריגות עם חסיד כו' ועם עקש תתפתל.
“And in the Zohar: ‘Wholesome’ means he traverses all levels—acting with the pious in one way, and with the crooked in another.”
The Zohar understands Jacob’s ‘wholeness’ as adaptive integrity—a harmony enabling him to move through all spiritual gradations while remaining rooted in truth.
וירש זה הכח לי"ב שבטים ד' דגלים לד' רוחות הם ד' בחי' הנ"ל.
“And he bequeathed this power to the twelve tribes; the four camps to the four directions correspond to these four aspects.”
The tribes inherit Jacob’s multifaceted ability. Their fourfold arrangement mirrors the spiritual modes Jacob embodied.
והתגלות השכינה עמנו בגלות הוא בשבת לכן שבת הוא זכר ליציאת מצרים שבו ערקת כל סט"א וכל המצרים.
“And the revelation of the Divine Presence with us in exile occurs on the Sabbath; therefore Sabbath is a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt, in which all forces of impurity and all constraints were removed.”
Sabbath is the weekly moment when God’s companionship becomes most revealed. Like the Exodus, it clears away constricting forces, allowing spiritual liberation.
עוד פי' אנכי ארד מלשון ממשלה כמו וירד מים עד ים.
“Another explanation of ‘I shall go down’: from the root indicating dominion, as in ‘He shall rule from sea to sea.’”
The descent of God signifies not lowering but sovereignty—an expansion of divine rule.
כי מלכותו ית' יתגלה במצרים באמצעות ירידת יעקב ובניו כמו שהי' אח"כ ואכבדה בפרעה כו'.
“For His blessed kingship would be revealed in Egypt through the descent of Jacob and his sons, as later occurred: ‘And I shall be glorified through Pharaoh.’”
The presence of Jacob’s family in Egypt becomes the channel through which divine majesty is revealed, even within oppressive structures.
וזהו ארד עמך מצרימה.
“And this is the meaning of: ‘I shall go down with you to Egypt.’”
God’s descent is purposeful, manifesting His sovereignty through Israel’s journey into exile.
Summary: God’s promise to descend with Israel reflects a perpetual divine companionship rooted in Jacob’s unique spiritual power. This presence nullifies constriction, enables transcendence of boundaries, and becomes most evident on the Sabbath. Jacob’s descent into Egypt initiates a revelation of divine kingship even within exile.
