Divine Presence in Exile

“In the verse: ‘I will go down with you to Egypt.’”
This introduces the divine promise that God descends with Israel into exile.
“It is a promise that the Holy One, as it were, is ‘with him in distress,’ as it is said regarding the exiles to Egypt.”
The Sefat Emet explains that God accompanies Israel in their suffering, beginning already with the exile to Egypt.
“To Babylonia—His Presence was with them.”
Just as in Egypt, so too in later exiles, the Divine Presence descended with Israel.
“This means that through our father Jacob the Shekhinah rests among Israel in exile.”
Jacob embodies the pathway through which God’s Presence remains with Israel wherever they wander.
“And this is ‘I will go down with you to Egypt’—the cause through which He dwells with us in exile.”
God’s bond with Jacob establishes His continual accompaniment of Israel in later exiles.
“As the order unfolded in that the tribes caused Joseph to descend to Egypt.”
First the brothers’ actions brought Joseph down to Egypt.
“And through Joseph, Jacob descended to Egypt.”
Joseph’s position in Egypt drew Jacob and the family down after him.
“And through Jacob, the Shekhinah descended to Egypt.”
Jacob’s presence drew the Divine Presence itself down into exile.
“And truly, within all Israel there is always present the root of our father Jacob, as the Sages said: ‘The image of Jacob is engraved beneath the Throne of Glory.’”
The eternal spiritual imprint of Jacob remains embedded within the people of Israel.
“Therefore, wherever he descended, the Shekhinah descended with him.”
Israel’s collective connection to Jacob ensures that God’s Presence follows them.
“And this is due to the attribute of truth, as it is written: ‘You shall give truth to Jacob.’”
Jacob is the embodiment of divine truth, which enables this continual companionship.
“And it is the seal of the Holy One.”
Truth is God’s signature, the core of His presence and action.
“Therefore, through the attribute of truth we are also able to receive vitality in exile.”
Truth sustains spiritual life even in the darkest exile.
“For the concealment of exile lies in falsehood.”
Exile’s power stems from distortion and spiritual untruth.
“For in truth, His sovereignty rules everywhere.”
God’s rule is universal; exile only obscures this fact.
“Therefore, through the attribute of truth redemption is awakened.”
Truth reveals God’s kingship and thereby initiates redemption.
“And so I heard from my grandfather of blessed memory on the portion ‘Jacob lived in the land of Egypt’: that through truth one can live even in the land of Egypt, as stated above.”
The Rebbe’s grandfather taught that truth grants spiritual survival even in harsh exile.
“And the Sages said: ‘One who delights in Shabbat is given a boundaryless inheritance … and I will feed you the inheritance of Jacob.’”
Shabbat opens access to the expansive inheritance associated with Jacob.
“For Shabbat is the return of everything to its root, as it is written: ‘Let no man go out from his place on the seventh day.’”
Shabbat restores creation to its source, mirroring Jacob’s quality of truth.
“And this is the attribute of truth.”
The unifying theme is that truth anchors, restores, and preserves connection to God in all circumstances.
Summary: Jacob embodies divine truth, which draws the Shekhinah into exile with Israel. Truth counters exile’s falsehood, sustains life even in spiritual darkness, and awakens redemption. Shabbat, which returns all things to their root, expresses this same attribute of truth.
