בפסוק אל תירא מרדה מצרימה כי לגוי גדול אשימך כו' אנכי ארד כו'.

“In the verse: ‘Do not fear to go down to Egypt, for I will make you there into a great nation… I Myself will go down…’.”

The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that God reassures Jacob that His descent to Egypt accompanies Jacob’s, forming the basis for Israel’s future greatness.

כי בני ישראל זכו לכל המתנות ע"י היסורים כדאיתא במד' שמות.

“For the Children of Israel merited all the gifts through suffering, as stated in the Midrash on Shemot.”

Israel’s spiritual achievements come specifically through trials, a principle emphasized in the Midrash.

וב' המדריגות שנאמר מי גוי גדול כו' קרובים כו' בכל קראינו כו'. ומי גוי גדול אשר לו חוקים כו'.

“And the two levels referred to in: ‘Who is a great nation… that God is close whenever we call…’ and ‘Who is a great nation that has statutes…’.”

These verses highlight two spiritual dimensions: the closeness attained through prayer and the greatness attained through Torah.

הוא בחי' תורה ותפלה ולכן הוצרך מקודם להיות במצרים ועל הים.

“These are the aspects of Torah and prayer, and therefore Israel first needed to be in Egypt and at the sea.”

Exile and deliverance formed Israel’s capacity for revelation in both Torah and prayer.

ולצורך בניו אחריו כדי שיזכו להיות גוי גדול חייבו המקום ב"ה לירד למצרים.

“And for the sake of his descendants after him, that they merit becoming a great nation, the Holy One required him to go down to Egypt.”

Jacob’s descent set the foundation for the spiritual elevation of all future generations.

ואמר אנכי ארד.

“And He said: ‘I Myself will go down.’”

God promises His presence within the exile itself.

כאשר השכינה הקדושה ירדה למצרים בעבור בנ"י כמ"ש גלו למצרים שכינה עמהם וכן לבבל כו'.

“For the holy Shekhinah descended to Egypt for the sake of Israel, as it is said: ‘They went into exile to Egypt—the Shekhinah was with them,’ and likewise to Babylon.”

Divine presence accompanies Israel wherever they are exiled.

כמו כן וכש"כ שצריכים הצדיקים לירד עם כלל ישראל בגלות.

“So too, and all the more so, the righteous must descend with the community of Israel into exile.”

True leaders share the fate and burdens of their people.

ובמד' גם עלה לרבות צדיקים אחרים.

“And the Midrash adds: ‘also ascend’—to include other righteous individuals.”

The ascent from exile also includes those tzaddikim who chose to enter it for Israel’s sake.

היינו הצדיקים שמכניסים עצמן לגלות עבור כללות ישראל כיעקב אבינו ע"ה:

“Meaning: the righteous who willingly bring themselves into exile for the sake of all Israel, like our father Jacob, peace be upon him.”

The Sefat Emet concludes that the tzaddik mirrors Jacob—selflessly descending so that all Israel may rise.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel’s greatness emerges through exile and suffering. God descends with them, and the righteous do as well, enabling the nation to attain the dual heights of Torah and prayer.
