Hidden and Revealed Holiness

“In the verse ‘And he sent Judah…’”
The Sefat Emet begins by referencing the verse in which Jacob sends Judah ahead, indicating this verse contains a deeper spiritual structure.
“We have already written elsewhere that Joseph descended to Egypt in concealment, for he embodies the aspect of the hidden.”
Joseph’s mission operates through inner, concealed holiness not apparent on the surface.
“A locked garden.”
This metaphor expresses Joseph's inward spiritual protection and purity.
“The covenant of the body.”
Joseph’s holiness is associated with physical covenantal purity.
“And Judah is in the revealed realm.”
Judah’s spiritual strength expresses itself outwardly and publicly.
“A sealed spring.”
This refers to Judah’s expressive dimension, like a flowing spring that is nevertheless sanctified.
“The covenant of speech.”
Judah’s holiness manifests through words, leadership, and public declaration.
“And so it is taught in the Talmud: Joseph, who sanctified Heaven’s Name in secret, had a letter from the Divine Name added to his own.”
Joseph’s hidden sanctification earns him hidden divine elevation.
“And Judah, who sanctified Heaven’s Name publicly, is called entirely by the name of God.”
Judah’s public sanctification aligns him completely with divine expression.
“These are the two rectifications prepared for Israel—hidden and revealed—just as the Zohar teaches that the Torah has hidden and revealed dimensions, and so too the people of Israel.”
Joseph and Judah represent the dual structure embedded in Torah and in Israel’s spiritual identity.
“This is the meaning of ‘He established testimony in Jacob.’”
A ‘testimony’ reflects the revealed realm where spiritual challenge exists.
“Testimony is relevant where there is opposition in this world.”
Revelation occurs specifically in contexts of struggle, where holiness must be affirmed.
“And the Torah, called Israel, is rooted in a higher source.”
The inner essence of Israel connects to a transcendent spiritual root.
“These two dimensions Jacob bequeathed to Joseph and Judah.”
Jacob transmits both hidden and revealed spiritual pathways to his sons.
“And since it is written, ‘And Israel loved Joseph… the son of his old age…’”
This verse shows that Joseph received the higher, inward dimension from Jacob.
“It appears that Judah and the tribes were in the lower aspect, that of the testimony in Jacob.”
Judah and the other tribes embody the revealed, worldly dimension in which divine testimony must be expressed.
Summary: The Sefat Emet explains the duality of hidden and revealed holiness through Joseph and Judah. Joseph represents inner, concealed sanctity, while Judah embodies outward expression. Jacob transmits both modes to his sons, forming the spiritual structure of Israel.
