Inner Light Revealed Through Surrender
Inner Light · Teshuvah · Bitul · Yosef · Kedushah
“In the Midrash: My son… you have guaranteed… you struck your hands for a stranger… accept His mastery…”
The Sefat Emet opens by citing the Midrashic chain of phrases that frames Judah’s plea as an act of spiritual responsibility and acceptance of divine authority.
For the human being was created to draw everything close to God, as it is written: “God made man upright.”
The purpose of humanity is to elevate creation toward its source, for man's natural state is straight and aligned with God.
Had man not corrupted himself, he would have remained continually attached to Him.
Spiritual distance is not natural; it emerges only from human distortion.
And this is also “arav”—meaning mixture—indicating his intrinsic blend and connection to holiness in the root of his soul.
The “guarantee” Judah offers symbolizes the soul’s innate interwoven bond with holiness.
And therefore all creation is naturally subject to him.
Humanity’s spiritual status shapes the state of the world itself.
But through physical actions in this world, when a person attaches himself to them, God forbid…
Over‑identification with materiality obscures the soul’s inherent holiness.
This is “you struck your hands for a stranger”—meaning that one’s energy, passion, desire, and will become mixed with improper things.
The misuse of inner vitality alienates the person from his true spiritual self.
Through this everything appears to him as darkness, for “a person’s deeds are repaid to him.”
The spiritual darkness a person perceives is largely the reflection of his own actions.
And similarly we find an example in the sale of Joseph, for by selling him they distanced brotherhood.
The brothers’ act fractured the natural spiritual unity among them.
Through this he appeared to them as an enemy, though Joseph was truly their brother.
Spiritual distortion makes the true appear false and the false seem true.
The remedy is to believe—even in darkness—that life comes solely from God, even when one’s eyes are blocked from seeing it.
Faith restores awareness of divine vitality even when perception is clouded.
When a person reaches this point and truly gives over his soul in self‑nullification and humility to reach the inner point—like “Please let your servant remain,” Judah’s self‑sacrifice for Benjamin’s guarantee…
True spiritual surrender reopens access to the deepest inner core of the soul.
And when a person is ready to give over his soul sincerely, without self‑interest, solely to recognize God's holiness…
Pure intention dissolves the barriers that conceal the divine spark.
Then “Joseph could not restrain himself”—this refers to the inner point within everything, called “Joseph.”
Joseph symbolizes the hidden spark of inner holiness that cannot remain concealed once awakened.
But through corruption this becomes concealed.
Spiritual distortion covers the inner light but does not extinguish it.
And the husk darkens and hides it, as if, God forbid, something were separate from God.
The illusion of separation arises from the layers of concealment.
But through true humility and self‑nullification, the innerness is revealed, and it becomes known that he is their brother.
Inner unity reappears when egoic barriers are removed.
And this is “Bi Adoni”—he believed that despite everything there is within him divine life.
Judah appeals to the inner divine point that remains even when hidden.
Even though it is hidden from him and he does not know how.
A person may be unaware of his own inner holiness, yet it remains present.
All this concealment is caused by sin.
The root of spiritual blockage lies in moral distortion.
But in truth: “Bi Adoni…”
The inner divine point remains accessible despite human failing.
So it is with every concealment.
Every darkness hides a latent spark awaiting revelation.
And what our Sages said regarding “they could not answer him… they were frightened before him… woe to us on the Day of Judgment…” can also be explained according to the above.
The brothers’ shock prefigures humanity’s awakening to inner truth on the Day of Judgment.
For “they were frightened before him” means the innerness—for they had regarded him as a foreigner, and suddenly the light of his innerness was revealed to them, that he was Joseph.
The revelation of true inner identity can be overwhelming when one has long denied it.
And they were greatly ashamed at how their sin caused such a light to appear to them in reversed form.
Sin distorts the appearance of holiness, turning light into apparent darkness.
And how much more so on the Day of Judgment, when it will be revealed to every person how the greatest abomination was in truth the very life‑force within him, exceedingly holy.
Even one’s lowest spiritual state contains hidden divine vitality.
And how through his sin he caused it to be turned into complete evil.
Human misuse of divine energy generates evil out of potential holiness.
And understand, for there is no need to lengthen this, as it has been written elsewhere.
The Sefat Emet signals that this theme appears in other teachings and will not be elaborated further here.
The Sefat Emet interprets Judah’s plea and Joseph’s revelation as metaphors for the soul’s inner holiness, which becomes concealed through sin but revealed through humility, faith, and self‑sacrifice. What seems dark or alien is in truth divine vitality awaiting rediscovery.
