Spiritual Descent and Ascent

Vayigash · תרל"ב (1871) · Essay 2

Jacob · Joseph · Divine Providence · Spiritual Levels

“In the name of my grandfather and teacher, of blessed memory.”

The Sefat Emet introduces the teaching as something he received from his revered ancestor.

“On what our Sages said: ‘He was fit to descend in chains,’ etc. And why would our father Jacob be deserving of this?”

The Sefat Emet raises the classical question: Jacob, the chosen patriarch, should not seemingly be destined for a degrading descent to Egypt.

“But the explanation is that he was destined to descend level after level until he could reach Egypt.”

The ‘chains’ are understood spiritually: a gradual decline in spiritual level necessary to enter the impurity of Egypt.

“But the Holy One, blessed be He, acted through Joseph, so that he (Jacob) could come there as he was, without any descent at all.”

Joseph’s righteousness provided a spiritual bridge, allowing Jacob to enter Egypt without undergoing the normal spiritual falling-off.

“Through the preparation made by his son, Joseph the righteous.”

Joseph’s spiritual work prepared Egypt so that Jacob would not be harmed by its impurity.

“And this is what is meant by ‘Descend… do not delay,’ for Joseph saw that he (Jacob) could now be in Egypt without any descent, as explained above.”

Joseph urges Jacob to come quickly, knowing the path has been purified and safe for him.

“But he feared lest sin might intervene and cause him to fall from his level, for the righteous do not trust in themselves.”

Despite Joseph’s preparation, he remains humble and cautious, aware that spiritual danger can always emerge.

“Therefore he said, ‘Descend… do not delay,’ as above.”

Joseph urges immediacy so that Jacob may enter Egypt while conditions are spiritually favorable.

Summary: The Sefat Emet interprets the idea that Jacob was ‘fit to descend in chains’ not as punishment but as a natural spiritual decline required to enter Egypt. Joseph’s righteousness prepared the environment, allowing Jacob to enter without such descent. Joseph’s urgency reflects both opportunity and humility before the possibility of spiritual danger.
