Unity Through Joseph’s Connection
Joseph · Jacob · Divine Providence · Inner Essence · Spiritual Unity
“And his heart failed, etc.”
The Sefat Emet explains that Jacob was overwhelmed and unable to take in the message at first, as his inner capacity to receive such news had not yet awakened.
“And he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent, etc.”
Jacob found difficulty in agreeing to descend to Egypt; the wagons served as a sign that enabled him to accept the journey.
For it was difficult for him to go down to Egypt.
Jacob resisted entering a spiritually constraining land, feeling that such a descent opposed his inner elevation.
And in truth, this was the reason Joseph descended beforehand: Joseph embodies the aspect that connects the matters of this world to the inner divine power within them, so that all externals and shells may be nullified into the inner essence.
Joseph’s prior descent prepared Egypt, transforming its outer coarseness into something that could be drawn toward holiness, making Jacob’s later descent spiritually possible.
And this is the meaning of the wagons: that everything would be brought back to the single root.
The wagons symbolized that all events, even exile, ultimately return to and reveal the oneness of the divine root.
And something similar is written in the book Kedushat Levi regarding the wagons.
The Sefat Emet notes that another Hasidic master also understood the wagons as symbols of unity and divine orchestration.
And this is the meaning of “he did not believe them”: Jacob’s cleaving to the tribes was only through Joseph the righteous.
Jacob could not sense a full spiritual bond with his sons until the influence of Joseph—who connects inner and outer—was present.
And indeed it is written: “The children of Israel carried Jacob their father,” for they were his chariot.
The tribes served as the vehicle through which Jacob’s divine mission was carried and revealed.
But only through Joseph did he draw after them.
Joseph’s mediating role enabled Jacob to be spiritually drawn along with his sons.
And earlier it says “he did not believe,” meaning that the connection and drawing had not yet occurred.
Before seeing the wagons, Jacob lacked the spiritual bond that would allow him to join them in the descent.
But afterward, when he saw the wagons, their father’s spirit revived.
The symbol of divine unity awakened Jacob’s inner life and restored their connection.
He became connected to them, as above, and the children of Israel carried him.
His renewed connection enabled him to join their path, supported by their collective spiritual strength.
Summary: Joseph’s role was to prepare the descent into Egypt by revealing the inner divine essence within worldly circumstances. The wagons symbolized the return of all things to their divine root, enabling Jacob to reconnect with his sons and accept the journey.
