Exile Sustained by Redemption

Vayigash · תרל"ז (1876) · Essay 4

Exile · Redemption · Yosef · Jacob · Seventy Souls

“In the Midrash: ‘I will go down with you… I will also bring you up… and on condition that Joseph will place his hand…’”

The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash, which links God’s promise of descent and ascent with Joseph’s role.

“The simple meaning is that redemption depends on the presence of Joseph’s power within Israel.”

He explains that the fundamental force enabling redemption is the spiritual strength associated with Joseph.

“However, it may be said that this also refers to the exile.”

He suggests that Joseph’s role is not limited to redemption but is structurally tied to exile as well.

“For indeed, no condition is explicitly stated in the verse.”

The Torah does not directly present Joseph’s role as a condition.

“But from the fact that God mentioned all these matters together, it follows that they are interdependent.”

The grouping of promises implies a hidden linkage between descent, ascent, and Joseph’s presence.

“Thus, ‘I will go down with you’ also stands upon this condition.”

Even the divine accompaniment into exile depends on the Joseph-force.

“For the root of exile is redemption.”

Exile derives its purpose and structure from the future redemption.

“And exile can exist only through the power of redemption.”

Redemptive energy sustains exile, giving it meaning.

“Thus redemption is the life-force of exile.”

Even in exile, redemption is secretly present as its animating soul.

“And God promised that the remedy always precedes the blow.”

Before exile begins, the redemptive cure is already in place.

“And this is the meaning of the seventy souls whose names are listed before the descent to Egypt.”

The enumeration signals that the redemptive structure—rooted in seventy—is prepared in advance.

“And the Sages said that Jacob completes the count, and some say that God completes the count.”

There is debate over who finalizes the seventy, reflecting different layers of spiritual root and identity.

“And the explanation is that the seventy souls stand against the power of the seventy nations, as it is written: ‘He set the borders of the nations…’”

The seventy Israelites correspond structurally to the seventy nations of the world.

“However, Israel themselves are one nation among the seventy nations.”

On the surface, Israel appears as just one of the seventy.

“And Jacob’s power is the root of the seventy souls.”

Jacob serves as the unifying spiritual source for all seventy branches.

“And he is above them, for there is no nation opposing him; he is the root of the whole, and thereafter the particulars unfold.”

Jacob represents the supranational unity beyond opposition, from which the seventy differentiated aspects arise.

“And this general unity is the root of redemption—the aspect of Joseph—who unites the particulars within the whole.”

Joseph embodies the power to integrate the many into the one, which is the essence of redemption.

“And indeed, through Joseph the seventy souls became connected to the Patriarchs.”

Joseph serves as the bridge linking the descendants to their ancestral root.

“And this is the meaning of ‘God sent me before you for sustenance.’”

Joseph’s mission was to provide spiritual and physical life in exile.

“Meaning that he was the one who gave them life in the exile.”

Joseph’s presence sustained Israel spiritually during their descent.

“Therefore, as long as Joseph’s power endured, the exile did not begin.”

Exile only truly starts when Joseph’s influence fades.

“Until it is written: ‘A new king arose who did not know Joseph…’”

Only once Joseph was forgotten could the exile take hold.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Joseph is the spiritual root of both exile and redemption. Exile exists only through the hidden life-force of redemption, prepared beforehand through the seventy souls rooted in Jacob. Joseph unifies the particulars with the whole, sustaining Israel until his influence is forgotten.
