Unity and Redemption

Vayechi · תרמ"ב (1881) · Essay 1

Exile · Gathering · Jacob · Joseph · Geulah

“Gather yourselves and I will tell; assemble and listen.”

The verse contains two forms of gathering, each pointing to a different spiritual function.

There are two types of gatherings: one is to arouse the power of giving, which is the aspect of Joseph the righteous.

Joseph represents outward flow and influence, the power of spiritual transmission.

And it seems that this aspect was fulfilled in them; therefore he was prepared to reveal to them.

Their readiness in Joseph’s quality made revelation possible.

And “assemble and listen” is the aspect of Benjamin the righteous, the power of gathering to be ready to receive.

Benjamin embodies inner receptivity, the vessel that holds spiritual influx.

And this aspect had not yet been fully repaired.

The inner capacity for unified reception was not yet complete.

Therefore it was concealed from him, for the exile was beginning.

The onset of exile blocked the full unification needed for revelation.

And the essence of exile is that the hearts of Israel cannot gather as one.

Disunity is the defining spiritual condition of exile.

And for this we pray: “Gather our scattered ones.”

Redemption begins with restored unity of hearts.

Therefore on Shabbat, when unity is restored, there is an awakening of redemption.

Shabbat temporarily heals the fragmentation of exile.

“And Jacob lived” in Egypt means that God prepared the cure before the blow.

The descent to Egypt contained within it the seed of its own healing.

And Jacob our forefather foresaw the benefit that would come from the redemption of Egypt, as it is written: “And afterward they shall go out with great wealth.”

Jacob saw exile not only as suffering but as preparation for growth.

And there they became a great nation, as the Sages compared it to a fetus born, regarding the verse “iron furnace.”

Egypt served as the womb in which Israel was formed.

And this is the secret of the end that he wished to reveal to them.

The hidden “end” concerns the transformative purpose of exile.

And likewise this was revealed to Joseph, and therefore Joseph wept when they spoke to him, as explained in earlier years.

Joseph sensed their misunderstanding of exile’s purpose and felt their fear.

From this we see that they felt the exile and Jacob’s departure, and feared they had caused, heaven forbid, a decline for their father, as implied by the verse “and they saw… that their father was dead.”

They interpreted the change in spiritual atmosphere as their own failing.

As if they thought Jacob would repair the world so death would be swallowed forever, and certainly that the Angel of Death would not rule over him—as the Sages indeed taught that Jacob did not die.

They believed Jacob’s holiness transcended mortality itself.

But Joseph told them that on the contrary, Jacob drew the light of life into Egypt to sustain a great people.

Jacob’s presence brought divine vitality even into the depths of exile.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that exile begins with disunity, and redemption with inward and outward gathering. Joseph and Benjamin represent giving and receiving. Jacob foresaw the redemptive purpose in Egypt, and Joseph reassured his brothers that Jacob brought life, not decline, into exile.
