Hidden Roots of Exile and Redemption
Exile · Redemption · Jacob · Faith · Yosef
“In the Midrash: This portion is closed, for when our father Jacob died, the eyes and hearts of Israel were closed.”
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining that Jacob’s passing created a spiritual concealment for Israel, symbolized by the ‘closed’ parashah.
“Another explanation: he wished to reveal the end, but it was concealed from him.”
A second Midrashic teaching: Jacob attempted to reveal the ultimate redemption but was prevented.
“This portion is ‘And Jacob lived,’ meaning it was a preparation to reveal what Jacob lived in Egypt.”
The ‘life’ of Jacob in Egypt is itself a hidden spiritual preparation before the exile could begin.
“Therefore the exile could not begin until this vitality of Jacob that was in Egypt became concealed.”
Jacob’s spiritual presence delayed the onset of the exile; only once it was hidden could exile commence.
“As it is written: ‘The heritage of their days is remembered forever,’ yet this was hidden so the exile could take effect.”
The eternal spiritual inheritance remained, but had to be concealed for the divine plan of exile.
“Therefore this portion is closed, for this vitality was sealed afterward, as said.”
The closed nature of the section symbolizes the concealment of Jacob’s sustaining light.
“And even simply, the actual exile did not begin until that entire generation ended.”
On the plain level, exile required the passing of Jacob’s entire generation.
“Only the eye of understanding was closed earlier.”
Mental and spiritual darkness preceded physical exile.
“For before the exile of the body comes the exile of the soul, for the body depends on the soul’s movements.”
Inner exile is the root of outer exile.
“And the exile of the souls occurred as soon as Jacob’s vitality was sealed.”
Once Jacob’s spiritual light was hidden, a soul-level exile began.
“With this we explained the verse: ‘And Joseph’s brothers saw… their father was dead… perhaps he will hate us and repay…’”
The brothers perceived the spiritual shift caused by Jacob’s death.
“‘The evil we repaid him…’ and Joseph wept.”
They interpreted events pessimistically; Joseph responded with compassion.
“‘You intended… to give life to a great people.’”
Joseph reframed their fear as providential good.
“This means the tribes immediately felt the exile.”
The brothers sensed exile even before it physically began.
“Thus: they saw their father was dead, for they could not find Jacob’s vitality.”
They perceived the loss of his sustaining spiritual presence.
“And Joseph inherited his father’s place.”
Joseph became the carrier of Jacob’s spiritual lineage.
“They believed that by selling Joseph they caused the Egyptian exile.”
The brothers assumed their actions triggered national exile.
“Thus: ‘the evil we repaid.’”
A confession rooted in guilt.
“But Joseph, who was on Jacob’s level and attached to redemption, knew all was for the good.”
Joseph’s perspective aligned with redemption rather than exile.
“For the root of exile is redemption.”
Exile contains the seeds of salvation.
“Thus: he sought to reveal the end, but it was concealed.”
Jacob wanted to show that redemption underlies exile.
“If the meaning is the time of Messiah’s coming, we do not know the depth of this secret.”
The Sefat Emet rejects a simplistic messianic explanation.
“And what practical difference would such knowledge make?”
Knowing dates is spiritually irrelevant.
“Rather, he wished to clarify the root of exile and redemption.”
Jacob intended to reveal the inner structure of history.
“For truly no evil descends from Heaven.”
All perceived evil is only hidden good.
“Days of evil arise only from the deficiency of the recipients, turning things to evil for them.”
The problem lies in human receptivity.
“And it is only concealment.”
Evil is a form of hiddenness.
“Therefore it has an end, for falsehood has no legs.”
Falsehood cannot endure.
“And had they known this truth, exile would not have ruled over them.”
A shift in perception would nullify exile.
“But since all was not yet repaired, the Egyptian exile was necessary.”
Incomplete spiritual repair required exile.
“Therefore Jacob could not reveal this end.”
Their spiritual state made such revelation impossible.
“Yet it is taught he did reveal what he wished, but in a hidden manner.”
Jacob transmitted truth indirectly.
“There is a luminous speculum, the level of Jacob.”
Jacob sees without concealment.
“And there is a non-luminous speculum, the level of faith.”
This is the path of faith through darkness.
“For the light comes precisely from the concealment.”
Faith reveals hidden light.
“Since he could not reveal the end… the repair had to be through faith.”
Faith becomes the vehicle of redemption.
“We must know this even now, for in every exile it is so.”
The pattern repeats in all generations.
“God prepares holy lights before each exile…”
Spiritual resources always precede hardship.
“And one can live through all the personal Egypts of every Jew.”
Each person’s constrictions can be survived through truth.
“Returning: the tribes felt the exile.”
Their perception made exile real for them.
“And Joseph is the root of redemption.”
Joseph embodies the redemptive force within exile.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Jacob’s hidden vitality sustained Israel, that exile begins in the soul before the body, that Joseph embodied redemption, and that faith uncovers the hidden light leading to geulah.
