במדרש קץ שם לחושך זמן נתן ליוסף כו'.

“In the Midrash: ‘He set an end to darkness’ — a time was given to Joseph…”

The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash that Joseph’s imprisonment had a divinely set endpoint.

דהנה ויהי לשון צרה.

“For behold, ‘vayehi’ is a term of distress.”

The word ‘vayehi’ signals that the narrative describes a moment of suffering.

כי כל תהלוכות יוסף הי' הכנה לכל גלות מצרים ואיתא בעתה אחישנה זכו אחישנה.

“For all of Joseph’s experiences were preparation for the entire Egyptian exile; and it is taught: ‘In its time— I will hasten it; if they merit, I will hasten it.’”

Joseph’s life serves as a template for the exile; redemption can come either at its fixed time or earlier, if merited.

וכבר כתבתי מזה במ"א.

“And I have already written about this elsewhere.”

The teaching here builds upon ideas the Sefat Emet has discussed in other places.

אבל בודאי יוסף הצדיק שהיה בבית האסורים ולא ביקש לו תחבולות רק בטח בה' כמ"ש ויהי שם בבית הסהר לכן היה גאולה שלו קודם הזמן.

“But certainly Joseph the righteous, who was in prison and did not seek schemes but trusted in God, as it says ‘and he was there in the prison,’ therefore his redemption came before the appointed time.”

Joseph’s reliance solely on God allowed his deliverance to occur earlier than the predetermined schedule.

וכמו כן ביצי"מ נעשו מת' שנה רד"ו.

“And likewise regarding the Exodus: instead of 400 years, it occurred after 210.”

The Exodus was also advanced, occurring far earlier than the decree of 400 years.

אכן כאן במאמר הזכרתני הי' נסיון שהגם שנרמז לו מקום גאולה אם לא היה פונה כלל.

“However, here in the episode of ‘mention me,’ there was a test—that although a hint of redemption was shown to him, had he not turned to it at all…”

Joseph’s interaction with the cupbearer presented him with a spiritual trial regarding reliance on human help.

היה יוצא מיד.

“He would have gone out immediately.”

Total trust in God would have brought instant redemption.

ומעט נטי' קלה שהיה לו נתוסף לו ב' שנים.

“And for the slight inclination he had, two years were added to his imprisonment.”

Even a minimal leaning toward human reliance caused his release to be delayed.

ז"ש התנאי ולא פנה אל רהבים ופני' מועטת יכול לפגום.

“Thus the verse: ‘and he did not turn to the arrogant’—even a small turning can cause damage.”

The Sefat Emet emphasizes how sensitive spiritual balance is; even minor misplaced trust has consequences.

כדאיתא מחשבה מועלת.

“As it is taught: thought has effect.”

Even inner intention carries real spiritual impact.

ויתכן לומר שאותן שלשים שנה שקדמו בני אפרים לצאת בודאי הי' גם זה מקום גאולה.

“And it is possible to say that the thirty years by which the children of Ephraim tried to leave early were also a potential moment of redemption.”

The premature exodus attempted by Ephraim may have aligned with a viable window for redemption.

אבל ע"י שבטחו בכחם נפגם.

“But because they trusted in their own strength, it was damaged.”

Their self-reliance undermined that potential redemption.

ונתאחרו עוד שלשים שנה.

“And another thirty years were delayed.”

This misplaced confidence caused further postponement.

ז"ש שהיצה"ר אבן אופל ודו"ק:

“Thus it says that the evil inclination is a ‘stone of gloom’; consider this well.”

The evil inclination clouds judgment, obscuring opportunities for redemption.

Summary: Joseph’s experiences reveal how trust in God can hasten redemption, while even slight reliance on human power delays it—both in Joseph’s life and in the national redemption from Egypt.
