The matter of the dream concerning the years of famine and plenty was already explained elsewhere: it came to hint at preparing the days of goodness for the days of hardship.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the dream’s structure itself revealed the spiritual principle of preparing in times of blessing for future difficulty.
And the illuminations that existed in the days of the Patriarchs and the Tribes were a preparation for the exile in Egypt.
The spiritual achievements of the forefathers established the inner strength needed for the nation to endure and be elevated through Egypt.
And the Holy One, blessed be He, creates the cure before the blow, just as the two years of plenty preceded the seven years of famine.
Divine providence always plants remedy and resilience in advance, before trials appear.
And Joseph’s descent to Egypt was a preparation for the redemption from Egypt.
Joseph’s journey laid the spiritual and practical groundwork for the future deliverance of all Israel.
As it is written: “He appointed it as a testimony for Joseph… a language I did not know I heard.”
This verse signals that Joseph embodies a testimony relevant to all future exiles.
Meaning: Joseph was a testimony for every exile of the Children of Israel, for just as Joseph was elevated through exile, he thereby came to hear “a language I did not know.”
Joseph gained an entirely new level of spiritual understanding specifically through the experience of exile.
Thus a new kind of knowledge was born for him, which he did not possess before—knowledge that requires refinement through exile.
Exile becomes a crucible that reveals deeper forms of consciousness otherwise impossible to attain.
And similarly, after the exile of Egypt they merited receiving the Torah in seventy languages.
Just as Joseph emerged with expanded understanding, so too Israel emerged from Egypt with access to all the world’s languages, symbolizing full spiritual breadth.
And this is a testimony for all four exiles: everything is for the sake of extracting “Bilaam” from their mouths and rectifying all languages.
Each exile purifies speech, revealing truth from within distortion, ultimately refining all human expression.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Joseph’s dream, his descent, and his spiritual growth model the purpose of all exiles—preparation, refinement of understanding, and the elevation of language until all speech is purified and aligned with Torah.
