Divine Plan in Exile

Vayechi · תר"נ (1889) · Essay 1

Exile · Torah · Providence · Jacob · Redemption

“In the Midrash: This portion is ‘closed,’ etc.”

The Sefat Emet begins by noting the exegetical question: why is this Torah portion closed? He introduces that this concealment teaches a deeper, deliberate structure in the Torah.

“The matter is to make known that the exile of the Children of Israel is not accidental, and every movement of Israel leaves an imprint in the Torah.”

Exile is purposeful, not random; every stage of Israel’s journey is encoded in Torah.

“For our Sages said: With the Torah the Holy One, blessed be He, created the world.”

Creation itself arises from Torah, so history mirrors Torah’s structure.

“He looked into the Torah and created the world.”

God’s act of creation follows the blueprint of Torah.

“And the essence of creation was for the sake of the Children of Israel.”

The purpose of the world is the spiritual mission of Israel.

“Therefore, the Holy One looked into the Torah, and in its sections is contained the entire unfolding of Israel’s path.”

Since Torah prefigures history, each portion reflects stages of Israel’s destiny.

“And there is a portion designated for exile; therefore it is closed.”

The closed portion symbolizes the hiddenness of God’s presence during exile.

“And the Holy One prepared the Torah before the world was created, so that the remedy would precede the blow.”

Torah contains the spiritual cure even before the affliction of exile arises.

“And certainly there are also sections designated for our present exile.”

Our own era’s struggles are likewise embedded in specific Torah passages.

“As it is written: ‘And this song will respond… for I know his inclination… before I bring him [into the land].’”

God anticipates Israel’s spiritual challenges and embeds their remedy in the Torah-song.

“And by way of remez: ‘I know’ can imply ‘breaking,’ as in ‘and he chastised (vayodea) the men of Sukkot.’”

The Sefat Emet offers a wordplay suggesting God breaks the power of the negative inclination.

“As it is taught: ‘I created the evil inclination; I created the antidote for it — this is the Torah.’”

Torah exists precisely to counteract the human inclination toward wrongdoing.

“And this is what is meant by: ‘I know his inclination before I bring him.’”

God provides the antidote in advance of the challenge.

“For He preceded the remedy to the affliction.”

The theme of pre‑prepared healing is repeated for emphasis.

“And this very statement, ‘I will go down with you,’ refers to the Torah — ‘I am (Anochi) the Lord.’”

The divine presence accompanying Israel into exile is manifested through Torah.

“And the Torah shares in the suffering of the Children of Israel.”

Torah descends into exile with Israel, sustaining them from within hardship.

“And this is [the meaning of]: ‘I am with him in distress.’”

Divine companionship in suffering is understood through the presence of Torah.

“And indeed, the descent of our father Jacob into Egypt is likewise as stated above, for Jacob is the root of the Torah.”

Jacob’s own exile prefigures all later exiles, as he embodies the essence of Torah itself.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Torah contains the blueprint and spiritual remedy for every stage of Israel’s history, including exile. The closed portion reflects the hiddenness of exile, yet Torah accompanies and sustains Israel throughout.
