Hidden Holiness Revealed

Joseph · Inner Light · Shame · Kedusha · Future Redemption

“In the Midrash: ‘Woe to us from the Day of Judgment,’ etc.”

The Sefat Emet begins by invoking the Midrashic image of awe and dread before ultimate revelation and judgment.

“The brothers’ terror seems to have come from the revelation of Joseph’s radiance; the shame was over having erred about Joseph’s holiness because of the concealment.”

The shock of the brothers arose when Joseph’s true spiritual light was revealed, exposing how mistaken they had been due to the concealment that had masked his holiness.

“And this is the very same shame of the future, when it will be revealed that the matters of this world themselves are filled with inner holiness.”

The shame at the end of days will come from realizing that worldly matters were always infused with holiness, though people failed to perceive it.

“And this is the essential shame a person must feel when he clarifies for himself that in every thing there is divine life—so how can we use God’s power to act against His will?”

True spiritual shame arises when one recognizes that every action relies on divine vitality, making any misuse of that vitality a contradiction of God’s will.

“And the general principle: the inner dimension is the aspect of Joseph, the guardian of the covenant; the inner point is called the covenant, and removing the foreskin is removing the externality that covers the covenant, as stated above.”

Joseph represents the inner covenantal point. Circumcision symbolizes the removal of external layers that obscure inner holiness.

“And this is the meaning of ‘they were terrified before him,’ as explained above.”

Their terror stemmed from the sudden unveiling of the inner holiness embodied in Joseph.

Summary: The Sefat Emet explains that the brothers’ terror before Joseph reflects the shame that comes when hidden holiness is revealed. This anticipates the future revelation that worldly matters are filled with divine life. Joseph represents the inner covenantal point, and recognizing this exposes how misperceptions arise from external concealments.
