Approaching God Through Surrender
Judah · Faith · Inner Light · Bitul · Joseph
“And Judah approached him.”
This is read as an expression of coming close through acknowledgment, hinting at the inner spiritual movement of Judah.
It is from the root meaning “to thank,” and this quality belongs to every Jew.
Judah represents the capacity for acknowledgment that defines the spiritual identity of Israel.
I heard from my grandfather and teacher that Jews are called “Yehudim” because they acknowledge God in all things, great and small, knowing everything comes from Him.
Gratitude is the essential trait that gives the Jewish people their name—it anchors all spiritual approach.
And through this, they are able to approach.
Acknowledgment opens the path for drawing near to God.
This is a counsel for every moment of distress or concealment that a Jew experiences.
In times of spiritual darkness, the way forward remains through humble acknowledgment.
The advice is to nullify oneself to God’s will by clarifying that even within concealment there is divine life.
Recognizing divine vitality in hiddenness dissolves the concealment itself.
This is the meaning of “And he approached”—he approached God.
Judah’s gesture symbolizes inner movement toward divine presence.
And this is also called approaching Joseph, for Joseph represents the inner point within a person that comes from God.
Joseph symbolizes the spark of divine innerness that one seeks to realign with.
In truth, Judah was then in great distress, as he said: “What can we say?”
Judah’s approach emerged from profound inner pressure and helplessness.
And his counsel was to approach the inner essence of the matter.
By seeking the core truth, he found orientation amid crisis.
For he added nothing in his request, but reviewed the matter within himself to align it and accept God’s will with joy.
Judah’s strength lay not in new arguments but in inner realignment.
And by clarifying that everything comes from God, the inner truth is revealed.
Recognition dissolves concealment and reveals the divine core.
Thus it is written, “Joseph could not restrain himself”—the inner point could no longer remain hidden.
The Sefat Emet reads the scene as the eruption of inner divine truth.
Therefore everyone was sent out, for the external layers concealing the inner truth were removed.
When inner truth emerges, all superficial forms fall away.
As said regarding Shabbat, union in the secret of Oneness comes through self-nullification to God.
Unity arises when ego dissolves before divine reality.
Thus “Bi Adoni,” and the Ari taught that the Name appears in the letters of “Yehudah.”
The divine presence is embedded within the identity of Judah.
In truth, the name written is “Adon-,” but within “Yehudah” is the Tetragrammaton.
Two names meet within Judah: divine transcendence and divine immanence.
Yet God and His Name are one, and the indwelling of the Shechinah in a person is expressed through the letters of “Adon...”
The divine presence manifests in human life through God’s aspect of sovereignty.
For it signifies His power and dominion.
This name represents God’s active rule within creation.
The Midrash says “You became surety for your friend,” and Rashi explains this refers to God, who is called ‘friend.’
The relationship between God and Israel is one of deep mutual closeness.
A person engages in worldly matters and becomes distant, but the advice is to know that even in the physical world there is divine life.
The key is perceiving divine vitality beneath mundane activity.
And by nullifying oneself to the root, one can be saved.
Return to the divine source grants spiritual rescue.
This is the meaning of “Accept His sovereignty.”
Accepting divine rule reconnects one to inner truth.
And the Midrash says: “One to one they shall approach.”
Approach happens when human oneness meets divine oneness.
As is said: “The mystery of ‘God is One and His Name One.’”
This unity is the foundation of spiritual approach.
This is “the plower meeting the reaper,” for Judah finds light even within concealment through faith.
Judah represents effort within the hidden world, breaking open inner illumination.
The plower refers to weekday labor; Joseph, separated and elevated, represents the reaper who returns everything to its root.
Judah works from below; Joseph completes from above.
Thus “he approached”—faith draws one to the level of Joseph.
Faith bridges the outer and inner dimensions.
This is also the meaning of God’s promise: “I will go down with you to Egypt… and Joseph will place his hand…”
Even in descent, the inner point (Joseph) steadies and guides.
Meaning: Joseph’s hand symbolizes the promise that in every constraint, God is present.
God’s nearness persists even in the tightest constriction.
And by nullifying oneself to the root, the level of Joseph, one arouses redemption.
Redemption begins with inner surrender.
This is the secret of connecting redemption to prayer: this awareness awakens redemption toward the realm of prayer.
Prayer arises from inner awareness of divine nearness.
Even simply, Judah’s request stemmed from removing personal bias and judging before Joseph what was right.
Judah exemplifies moral clarity freed from self-interest.
Likewise, in any distress a person may pray to God even knowing his sins caused it.
The door of return never closes.
Nevertheless, when he nullifies himself before the truth and seeks help to be saved, he is answered.
Honest self-surrender always draws divine response.
Judah’s approach symbolizes the spiritual movement of acknowledging God even within concealment. Through alignment with the inner point—Joseph—one reveals hidden divine life, dissolves barriers, and awakens redemption. The path is self-nullification, faith, and truthful acknowledgment, which open the way to divine nearness in every circumstance.
