Surrender to Divine Truth

בפסוק ולא יכול יוסף להתאפק כו'.
“In the verse: ‘And Joseph could not restrain himself…’”
The Sefat Emet begins by focusing on the phrase that opens the dramatic revelation of Joseph.
דכתיב ויגש אליו יהודה פי' אליו ליוסף.
As it is written: “And Judah approached him,” meaning he approached Joseph.
This is the simple, literal reading—Judah steps forward toward Joseph.
גם אל עצמותו פי' לעצמו.
Also: “unto himself,” meaning Judah approached his own essence.
An inner approach—Judah confronts his own depths.
גם פי' אליו להקב"ה.
Also: “unto Him,” meaning unto the Holy One, blessed be He.
The approach to Joseph also reflects an approach to God.
וביאור הענין כי הנה יהודה לא חידש דבר באלה הדברים וגם לא היה לו טענה במה לבוא ליוסף.
And the explanation is that Judah introduced nothing new in his words and had no real claim with which to come before Joseph.
Judah’s speech held no legal power; it was not an argument of force.
אעפ"כ לאשר בירר אמיתות הענין בא לו הישועה.
Nevertheless, because he clarified the truth of the matter, salvation came to him.
His sincerity itself opened the gate of rescue.
כענין אמת מארץ תצמח.
As in the verse: “Truth shall spring forth from the earth.”
Truth emerging from below draws divine response from above.
והאמת כי כל פרשה זו מיוסף ואחיו. הוא משל לעבודת בנ"י להקב"ה.
The truth is that this entire narrative of Joseph and his brothers is a parable for the service of Israel toward God.
Their dynamics reflect the soul’s relationship with the Divine.
כאשר חכמים הגידו אוי לנו מיום הדין כו' ומה יוסף קטנן של שבטים כו' במדרש ובזוה"ק.
As the Sages taught: “Woe to us on the Day of Judgment… and if Joseph, the youngest of the tribes…” as stated in the Midrash and Zohar.
The awe before Joseph foreshadows the awe before God.
ופי' הנמשל כי השי"ת מלא כל הארץ כבודו וגם במקום החושך שם נסתר כבוד מלכותו ית'.
The meaning of the parable is that God’s glory fills all the earth, and even in darkness His kingship is hidden there.
Divine presence pervades even concealed realms.
כמאמר גם חושך לא יחשיך ממך.
As in the verse: “Even darkness is not dark for You.”
What appears obscure to us is luminous before God.
לזאת בכל עת צרה כשאדם מבטל עצמו אל האמת ובמס"נ כמו יהודה שאמר איך אעלה אל אבי...
Therefore, in every time of trouble, when a person nullifies himself to truth and with self‑sacrifice—as Judah said, “How shall I go up to my father…”
Real surrender to truth reveals divine clarity even in crisis.
ועי"ז נתגלה לו האמת וראה כי הכל טוב ולא היה לו כלל ממה לירא כי אני יוסף כו'.
Through this, truth was revealed to him, and he saw that all was good, and he had nothing to fear, for “I am Joseph.”
The frightening unknown was transformed into clarity and reconciliation.
וכבר כ' מזה לכן קצרנו.
This has been written earlier, therefore the explanation here is brief.
The Sefat Emet signals that he is summarizing earlier teachings.
אבל פי' ולא יכול יוסף הוא מלשון אלפים בת יכיל.
But the phrase “Joseph could not” is like “the oxen could not endure.”
“Could not endure” suggests a vessel unable to contain abundance.
כי הנה הקב"ה ברא העולם להיות הכל במדה. ומדריגות זו על זו.
For God created the world so that everything is in measure, with levels one above another.
Creation unfolds in ordered gradations.
וכשאדם מבטל עצמו כראוי אל המדריגה שלמעלה ממנו אז ניתוסף למעלה כח וברכה בעבור מדריגה שלמטה.
And when a person properly nullifies himself to the level above him, strength and blessing are added Above for the sake of the level below.
Human alignment draws divine overflow.
ואז המדריגה שלמעלה מלאה ברכת ה' עד שקטן הכלי מלהכיל.
And then the higher level becomes filled with God’s blessing until the vessel is too small to contain it.
The upper world overflows from fullness.
וצריך להשפיע למדריגה שלמטה.
And it must therefore pour down to the lower level.
Overflow becomes transmission.
וזה ענין ולא יכול יוסף להתאפק...
And this is the meaning of “Joseph could not restrain himself…”
The upper level (Joseph) could no longer hold back its flow.
שע"י שביטל יהודה אליו ואמר ישב כו' עבדך כו' עבד לאדוני.
Because Judah nullified himself before him and said, “Your servant… a servant to my lord.”
Judah’s surrender opened the channel.
והנה יוסף לא ביקש רק שיקבל עליו יהודה מלכותו.
And Joseph sought only that Judah accept his kingship.
Recognition of authority was the key point.
ויהודה אף שלא הבין הענין איך יהיה משועבד לזה האדון...
And Judah, though he did not understand how he could be subservient to this master...
To Judah, Joseph still appeared as a foreign ruler.
עכ"ז לאשר היה יהודה איש אמת. וראה כי כן האמת אשר הוא משועבד אליו הודה אל האמת.
Nevertheless, because Judah was a man of truth, and saw that truth required submission, he acknowledged the truth.
Truth, not comprehension, guided him.
וכן הענין בנמשל שכ' במדרש ע"פ אם ערבת לרעך כו'.
And so it is in the parable, as the Midrash teaches on the verse “If you have become surety for your fellow…”
The human‑divine relationship parallels Judah and Joseph.
שכשאדם מבטל עצמו למלכות שמים ומודה על האמת מתהפך אליו החושך לאור.
For when a person nullifies himself to the Kingdom of Heaven and acknowledges the truth, the darkness turns to light for him.
Submission to divine truth transforms concealment into illumination.
