Humility as the channel for prophecy and Shabbos
Moshe Rabbeinu · Nevuah · Bittul · Emunah · Shabbos
On the pasuk "in all My house he is faithful" — for the Midrash teaches that the lower beings cannot withstand the assignments of the Omnipresent, yet at the giving of the Torah all of Bnei Yisrael were fit to be prophets.
Of Moshe Rabbeinu it is said "ne'eman hu" (Bamidbar 12:7). The Midrash notes that earthly beings normally cannot bear direct Divine charge, but at Matan Torah every Jew rose to a level worthy of nevuah (prophecy).
As it is written: "I said... and you are all sons of the Most High."
At Sinai Bnei Yisrael were as exalted as angels, "sons of the Most High" (Tehillim 82:6).
And through the sin, "you shall die like a man."
The sin of the Golden Calf forfeited that angelic immortality, returning them to ordinary mortal status (Tehillim 82:7).
And the power of prophecy is according to a person's emunah (faith/faithfulness).
The capacity to prophesy corresponds to the degree of a person's emunah — here understood in a specific sense the Sefas Emes now defines.
The meaning: emunah is to remain at the level one has attained without changing, like "a peg in a faithful place."
Emunah here means steadfast permanence — staying firmly fixed at a spiritual level one has reached, like a tent-peg driven into a secure spot (Yeshayahu 22:23).
And when a person is prepared to receive prophecy so as to be permanently established in it without change, he merits prophecy.
Only one who can hold a prophetic attainment steadily and unchangingly is granted nevuah.
And there are many levels of prophecy, and Moshe Rabbeinu was "faithful in all My house" and merited the highest prophecy, for he was able to stand firm in that supernal prophecy; for of Moshe Rabbeinu it is written "ish ha'Elokim" (man of God), and the Midrash said "half man and half God."
Moshe's unmatched steadfastness ("ne'eman") earned him the loftiest prophecy. Called "ish ha'Elokim" (Devarim 33:1), he was, as the Midrash puts it, "half man and half godly" — combining an earthly and a transcendent dimension.
And this is what is meant by "and the man Moshe was exceedingly humble" — the meaning is that this "man" part within him was humble and lowly.
The Torah's praise of Moshe's humility (Bamidbar 12:3) refers specifically to the "ish" — the human half of him, which was utterly humble and self-effacing.
But the "godly" part within him, on the contrary, was elevated higher than the angels — for this very reason — as the Zohar says: "one who is small, he is great; the Holy One, blessed be He, makes great only the one who makes himself small."
Precisely because of his bittul (self-nullification) in the human half, Moshe's Divine half soared above the angels. The Zohar's principle: Hashem exalts specifically the one who diminishes himself.
And Chazal said: with a haughty spirit, "I and he cannot dwell together."
Hashem says of the arrogant person that He cannot dwell in the same world as him (Sotah 5a) — gaavah (haughtiness) drives away the Shechinah.
And likewise, Moshe Rabbeinu, who was exceedingly humble — the Shechinah rested upon him and spoke from within his throat.
Because Moshe was so humble, the very opposite occurred: the Shechinah dwelt with him so fully that prophecy flowed through his own voice.
And it is taught that Shabbos is the aspect of Moshe Rabbeinu.
Shabbos corresponds spiritually to Moshe — both share the same quality the Sefas Emes is describing.
Therefore it is written "Moshe shall rejoice in the gift of his portion," for Shabbos is "a good gift from the treasure-house of the Holy One, blessed be He."
The Shabbos tefillah "Yismach Moshe" links Moshe's joy to Shabbos, which Chazal call a precious gift from Hashem's own hidden treasury (Shabbos 10b).
And it is written of Moshe "in all My house he is faithful," and therefore he drew down the gift of Shabbos to Bnei Yisrael.
Moshe's faithfulness, his quality of "ne'eman," is precisely what enabled him to channel the gift of Shabbos to the Jewish people.
And Shabbos too is half within time and half above time; therefore it draws blessing to all the times.
Like Moshe's dual nature, Shabbos straddles both worlds — rooted in time yet reaching above it — which is why it can pour blessing into all the days of the week.
And Shabbos "has nothing of its own," and all the melachos (forms of work) cease on it within the dimension of time; therefore all the blessings from Above are on Shabbos, for "the Holy One, blessed be He, makes great only the one who makes himself small," as above.
Shabbos embodies the same bittul as Moshe: it claims nothing for itself and all melachah is nullified within it. Precisely this self-effacement is why it becomes the channel for all heavenly blessing — Hashem exalts the one who makes himself small.
Summary: Prophecy depends on emunah understood as steadfast permanence — holding firm at one's attained level "like a peg in a faithful place." Moshe Rabbeinu, "faithful in all My house" and "half man, half godly," reached the highest nevuah precisely through the bittul of his human half: the more he made himself small, the higher his Divine half soared, for "Hashem exalts only the one who diminishes himself." Shabbos shares this very quality — half in time, half above it, claiming nothing of its own — and therefore becomes the channel through which Moshe drew down all heavenly blessing to Bnei Yisrael.
